stone experts : i need advice

my counter crema antartida possibly also blue ice seems to be crumbly at the rough edges and i noticed this morning a chunk missing from the underside of the counter. it is above my silverware drawer and i would think that if someone banged it really hard, i would have damage to the cabinet which there isn't. my theory is that one of the sparkly bits (mica maybe) weakened and fell out. the missing piece is not on the floor and there is a circular pattern inside the divot. i can feel a depression along the bottom adjacent to the divot where the black lines run through the stone. this has only been installed for roughly 2 months:(
so is there a way to avoid more missing pieces? i called the fabricator/stoneyard and they will come out when time allows to fix it. i am looking to prevent it in the future. any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I'm not familiar with that stone but stones with mica will do that. Some stones have black deposits that can give the fabricator (and you) fits also. You may have to get used to doing small repairs.

The bottom edge looks too sharp. I'd have it profiled and finished.

Are granites 'rated' in any way? I'm getting Mesquite. I don't know if it's mica that it's got. It's got white 'spots'. I've paid for them, but I've been told that if I still had any reservations, when we go to template I could switch the money to something else. All the counter stories have me most nervous of all.

thanks trebruchet, i will ask when they come out for the fix. i never thought to be concerned about the bottom of the counter.

In my geologic opinion, that stone is going to keep chipping along that bottom edge. The thin black layer is mica, which is shaped like little flakes. In the case of this rock, all those mica flakes are lined up in one mini-layer and it would be my guess that it will keep flaking along that layer, making the nearby quartz fall out.

I imagine they'd be able to epoxy it or something, but that's a question for the fabricators. But I would definitely do something as it looks like it's a problem.

Cal Quail, no they don't rate granites. It seems to be a 'buyer beware' type of market. Case in point, your Mesquite is definitely not granite. It's not even granite in the kitchen sense of the word, which is a broad category. Your rock looks more like an agate or an onyx. You'll definitely want to test samples of that one to see how hard it is, if it stains, and if it etches from acids.

Dunno about granite and chipping, but the mesquite stone linked above looks awesome!

I Agree with Treb and Karin . I haven't heard of many problems with this stone and after the fabricator addresses
the chip and edge you should be okay.
That piece was probably loose or ready to dislodge for a long time. Maybe somebody hit it just right.
It should be a pretty straight forward repair.
