Oh boy! Beverly, almost 68, born 1940! Married dh 32 yrs. ago. SAHM to adopted 17 yr. old DD. Also mom to 46 DS and 44 DD. Yup, 3 kids and one Gorgeous Grandson. Very tired and confused. Retired paralegal and health claim manager. I was 50 and DH was 43 when we adopted Chloe, now 17. Almost too tired to start the reno of the 1989 "temporary cosmetic" re-do of orig 1960 kitchen, 1700 s.f. blah, split level in north 'burb of Chicago. Have lived in this stuffed house for 31 years. DH is a pack rat and compulsive shopper, in denial.
Current kitchen has junk stuffed white painted cabs, trashed 1989 maple hw floors, and '89 electrostatically white painted over orig copper appliances, now peeling off disgustingly.
Painted and stained woodwork. HW everywhere.
Planning minimalist kitchen. What are the chances of that happening? Have money now but in search of arsonist!

Hi, everyone, and a special congrats to Igloochic. I've been away from here, and from working on the kitchen, for many months and thought this would be a great place to jump back in.

    2. So.Cal.
    3. 3100sf + studio
    4. Stained. Currently 80's no hardware medium oak. Will be light bamboo?

    5. White coolers and smalls, black stove, oven, dw, red hood, changing to paneled, with some stainless, glass and chrome. Countertop is white tile with yellow trim and will probably be jade bioglass or white quartzite since I can't find any tile I really like and can't afford pyrolave. Floor is light, textured tile (kind of taupe with white bumps). Will probably be something similar but prettier. I found some gorgeous tile with an incised pattern, subtle colors, and transient glowing gold touches...which sucks all the light out of the room. Probably not getting that :)
    6. Both. Beams, floors and cabinets are stained. Baseboards and other cabinets are painted.

Phoggie - my mother and her side of the family are all from Kansas & I spent many a summer there visiting various relatives (still do).

I believe Kansans are perhaps the friendliest people in the world except for perhaps Igloochic who is perpetually bubbly, seemingly the most popular OP on GW, and hilarious to boot.
This is a fun thread to read - thanks for posting.

    2. Where do you live? (or area)
    Los Angeles area

    3. How large is your house?
1824sf. Our planned addition would put us at about 2100.

    4. Are your kitchen cabinets stained or painted? describe
Good question. I think they are laminated MDF--very worn and ugly. My favorite are the PLASTIC drawers! Three of the drawer fronts have come off. I can't even glue them back on, they just crack off in a new place. Although I am eager to replace everything, it's actually not bad for low-end 1970's DIY.

    5. What color are your appliances? Countertop? Flooring?
    Appliances: bisque, almond
    Countertop: Whitish laminate
Flooring: yellowish sheet vinyl all the way up the toekicks

    6. Do you have stained or painted woodwork in your home?
One room has beautiful tongue and groove stained pine panels, built-in cabinets, bookcases, wet bar. Our visitors walk into that room and are generally impressed. It's not "wood paneling". I have that in two other rooms and it's ugly.

Hey lisapico~~~Thanks for the kind remarks about about the people from Kansas being so friendly. I think they are also. We are such a laid back state, except for maybe Kansas City, things move at a much slower pace. We are in the Bible belt and, for the majority, do have good morals and always are there to lend a hand to our neighbors. I suppose you have heard of the tornado that wiped out little Greensburg.....but they have the good old drive to rebuild and so thankful for everything that FEMA and others have done for them.....not like some of the other parts of the country. Where was your mother from?...and you are welcome to come on back to visit here anytime~~

My mother was born in Topeka and was raised in Wichita. My great grandfather was the State architect and designed many of the bldgs at KU and KSU (which was called Kansas State Ag College back in 1920's). He was about the nicest person anyone could have ever met. I had two uncles who were vets and taught in Manhattan. This thread has made me homesick as I have such fond memories of when I was a child.

    Where are you from?

    2. Virginia

    3. My house is a 1963 custom ranch/rambler money pit on one acre. Rough estimate is 3200 sq. feet living space, not including garage.

    4. Kitchen is small (per 1963 standards). Cabinets are currently frosted oak which appear quite pink in color. They will be painted creamy white with new doors and hardware. One section of the kitchen will be getting new cabs.

    5. Countertop currently pink formica, changing to soapstone. Appliances 18 years old and falling apart, changing to GE Cafe in stainless. Floor currently pink linoleum, changing to red oak hardwood to match existing floors in remainder of house. And in case you're wondering -- No, I didn't choose pink, pink, pink. That distinction goes to previous owner.

    6. I have painted woodwork. I like continuity so the woodwork throughout the house is painted Shell White.

    4. Cabinets are painted white. Our largest set of upper cabinets are painted white with glass fronts.
    5. Large appliances are white. Small appliances are stainless. The countertop and backsplash are white cermaic tile. The counters have this sad little piece of light-stained wood as trim at the bottom. The rest of the trim (toe boards, crown molding, etc) have white painted trim. The flooring is mexican tile. I love the floors. It gives the sage paint on the walls a nice pop. Of course, this is at the house we are trying to sell. The house we are trying to buy has a pitiful, 80's reno country kitchen... with formica countertops and lino floors. It is so sad!! That's why I came here - to get inspiration.
    6. This question confused me. We have hard wood floors throughout, but the baseboards and crown molding are painted.

    5. What color are your appliances? Countertop? Flooring?
My house is a trip back into time - back to 1960 when it was built. A few of the appliances have been replaced, but they are so old that we will just rip them out and throw them away. Everything else in original. Including our two gold stained glass front doors.
    6. Do you have stained or painted woodwork in your home?
We will have painted white trim and moldings if we ever get this remodel complete. Right now, we have cheap-looking wood on our cathedral ceiling and no crown molding at all.

I really appreciate all the help I have gotten so far. I am sure I am going to have a million more questions to bring my home up to date. We hope to start our remodel in January!

About 4600 sq. ft. After our remodel, 5000. Part of our remodel includes a 400 sq. ft. addition off the family room and kitchen.

    4. Are your kitchen cabinets stained or painted? describe
Currently they are oak with stain circa 1986. When finished they will be Ivory painted maple with pewter glaze perimeter and black weathered and distressed island.

    5. What color are your appliances? Countertop? Flooring?
Currently the appliances are stainless and will be staying stainless, except for my stainless sink which will be replaced with a copper farmhouse sink. The current countertops I believe are venetian gold but the perimeter will be replaced with absolute black, the island will be replaced with red dragon and the butler's pantry and bar will be black mosaic gold (Thank's Igloochic for turning me on to this fabulous conversation piece:) The floors are currently ceramic tile but will be replaced with wood.

    1. Name: Saylor

    Age: between 40 and death

    Sex: not very often :(

Marital status: Seems okay - consistent - we're happy

    2. Where do you live ? : Toronto (That's just north of
Buffalo but a whole lot nicer)

    1. How large is your house ? : It varies. When the two
of us are here alone it is just right. When the in-
laws arrive it is way too small. When I am trying to
find my keys it is way too big.

      4. Are your kitchen cabinets stained or painted ? : Yes -
some of each. White and dark brown from Ikea. Still in
their boxes. A portion of them will be exchanged the
next time Precious has a mood swing.

      5. What color are your appliances ?: Stainless I hope. We
haven't opened them yet and if things run true to
course they are probably a wonderful assortment of
black, avocado, bisque and harvest gold. But for
now I am thinking they are stainless.

Countertop ? : It's green but there's some white and
a little bit of rose and brown and black I think, or
maybe not. Looked at about 60 thousand slabs so the
mind gets cloudy at times...but I am pretty sure it's
green. It's Cactus Boreale granite and all the
pictures I look at are green so....

It's bought and paid for but not installed. We were
going to do copper but Precious had a revelation and
so the cupboards turned white and the copper turned
to stone. A lot of things turn to stone when Precious
    has a revelation - or a mood swing ... :(

Flooring ?: We are planning on dark brown Jatoba, but...

    6. Do you have stained or painted woodwork in your home ?:

Some of both - was here when we bought it. Don't blame
us. We took one look and realised that we had been
sent to the property to do God's work. We are rescuing
the place from a very aesthetically-challenged couple.

    3. How large is your house?-
Main house almost 5,000 sq ft. Guest house (grandparents) 1800 sq feet. both on 5 acres of orchards, vineyard &
    gardens.

    2. Dallas suburbs

    3. House is about 3000sf

    4. We just finished pulling out stained oak beadboard cabinets. They were pretty ugly with the heavy grain and an orangey hint to the stain. Right now there are no cabinets, but soon we will have Ikea Adel Birch. I adore them.

    5. Appliances are stainless, except the oven which we haven't gotten around to replacing because it works really well - it's black. Currently no countertops, but they were Corian, beige with speckles. Soon they will be granite. I'm hoping for delicatus. One of the local shops has some in stock and we're headed out there this weekend to check it out. Floors are stained hardwoods. After the kitchen is done we will be sanding, handscraping and restaining. We already did this upstairs and now it's time for the first floor (we only have carpet in the master bedroom and media room, everything else is wood, which I love).

    6. We have a mixture of stained and painted. The builtins in the living room and the trim in the dining is stained. It's painted everywhere else. We will be painting the builtins with this remodel - black!
