Trying to get ideas about what kind of hood (chimney, wood, ...) would love to see visuals of what you all have.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried the Finished Kitchens Blog? Just about every kitchen has a hood. But, if you want to narrow your search, then just go to the FKB section on hoods. Plenty of hood photos there!

Here is a link that might be useful: Finished Kitchens Blog/ Hood Category

I meant to add to my previous post that you should also try looking at the websites of various hood manufacturers. Modernaire, for example, has a photo gallery which features hoods that have been installed in real people's kitchens (including my own as well as those of several members of the GW Kitchen Forum family.) :-)

Modernaire one I want and maybe they can help you too.

Steelerfan, yummy hood and backsplash! What is the purdy silver border tile trim around the behind range mosaic? Love!!!

Oh...these hood pictures are lovely, in my next house I must have a kitchen large enough.

    rexem, Love your Chambers!

I've got the same color with the high backsplash. I can't wait to see your tile.

Here's a picture of the model I bought to go over my chambers. It's low profile. We're still in de-construction mode.

jterrylynn - thanks for the compliments on the backsplash. It is one of our favorite elements in the kitchen. The border is tile - antique gold ogee border. It does look silver in the picture (halogen hood light is on) but it is actually bronze in color.

Please keep the pictures coming . . .
I'm with ejbrymom. I thought I was going to put a large mantel into my kitchen, but now I don't think the space is big enough. I'm now considering a small mantel shape or a wood chimney (with the width of a standard range), and I really don't know what styles work best.

    More pictures PLEASE . .. . .

This might not work in your situation, but what the heck...it's a hood :) And the idea for it was actually stollen from another fabulous hood on GW that has mexican tile (I think that's what it is) where I have the black granite on my hood. The entire hood was built on site around a vent a hood insert.

I've posted this pic a lot, sorry, but here's my 1967 Broan Chuck Wagon, 900 cfm, $100 CL hood. It was a nice, sedate white and I painted it the screaming yellow. It's not the Modernaire of my dreams, but my current budget isn't Modernaire worthy, so...the $100 CL number it was.

Sandy, you'd be a nut to change out that hood. You have a fabulous space full of wonderful character. don't change it!!!!

missmuffet - The cabinets are custom - hard maple with cherry stain and glaze. Our cabinet maker listed them as Madison Doors and Drawer Fronts with presidential raise and j-2 edge profile (which probably doesn't mean anything unless you have the exact same cabinet maker). If you need more info., send me an e-mail. hope that helps

    Sandyp,

Totally agree. That hood is fantastic.

You are soooooo creative. I love it. I want to do
something like that. I too, do not have the extra cash for
a Modernaire. Okay I am checking out CL now.

Oh, thank you, igloochic and boxerpups. Truthfully, unless I win the Megabucks, and can hire someone to do everything, to my exact specs, whilst I am on a chartered cruise in the Med, the Chuckwagon will be there till they cart me out of here in the pine box, but my all time fav movie kitchen is from Moonstruck, and Cher's mother had an old time, half round hood that closely resembles the Modernaire units (like marthavila's!), so I have a soft spot for those.

And WRT CL, I looked for over a year, almost bought a more expensive plain old stainless Viking, but didn't, then, less than a week later, up came this one and I pounced. So, boxerpups, keep checking CL and even Ebay, there were several on there that I considered, but the shipping scared me off.

    Thanks again-

    Sandy--that is incredible!!

I desperately want a vintage looking ModernAire hood for my vintage O'Keefe and Merritt range. I never considered an actual vintage hood b/c I figured they wouldn't work well. How is the performance of yours?

    Thanks!

    bayareafrancy-

The hood is 900cfm and 42" wide and it's mounted higher than standard guidelines (we sandyponders are tall people, like to cook together and didn't want any smashed temples, so we installed it higher than usual). It works great for us, but I have to say that I've never had a really good hood, so I can't compare it to a new ModernAire or other high end hood. We cook a lot; fry, wok, saute, etc., and it removes odors and smoke effectively.

The surround is thin plywood and the line of stuff between the wood and the hood are upholstery tacks that I lightly hammered into the gap between the metal and the wood. Someday I think I might use more of the tacks (when I see a good thing at the dollar store, I stock up) to make a pattern on the wood, but it's summer in the north country, and all home improvements are suspended till the snow flies again.

    Good luck-

I am loving seeing all these hoods! I can finally post mine since the backsplash finally got grouted.

dandgbb , is the the 36" Luxor model? Where did you find it?

  • dandgbb

    willnak,

Funny you should mention the Luxor - it's the other one I was considering, but I finally decided on the Streamline, since I felt the Luxor was too modern for my kitchen style.

Salmon slayer, I first thought you meant you have a remote for your stove hood. All I could think was how to keep this secret from my husband. Scared me there for a minute! He could care less about my kitchen design, cabinets, colors, design all totally unimportant to him... but hand the man a remote???

Beautiful hoods ladies. Lots of different choices.

  • willinak

dandgbb, to me they both look like the same hood or very similar, the difference being that the Luxor uses their perimeter draw w/o mesh filters, and the Streamline uses the mesh filters.
Also, what I like is the use of the fluorescent lights. Much superior, imho, than the halogen for this application.

Were you able to see both in person?

  • dandgbb

The main difference is that the Luxor is all glass and the whole thing lights up, where as the one I got is all stainless steel with a thin light which makes it interesting but not as flashy as the Luxor. That's why I didn't pick the Luxor I thought it would be too much for my kitchen.

No, I wasn't able to see them both before purchasing. That was my biggest concern but I read a lot of reviews online and made my decision.
