Upper Cabinet Bump outs

I have found previous posts regarding sink cabinet bump outs but am looking for some advice on upper cabinet bump out depths.

We are set on white painted inset cabinets and thanks in large part to GW now my eye finds vertical seams like a magnet! An alternative we are considering for upper cabinets is varying cabinet depths where we have long run of cabinets.

Is there a standard or recommended size variation for bumping in or out upper cabinets? I would like a subtle change (like 1-1.5") but will this make crown and light rail install a beast?

Any photos or recommendations are greatly appreciated!!
