What size are your double ovens?

Posted by marti8a (My Page) on

I have two ovens, but I wouldn't call them double ovens. One is 30" and one is 27" and they are not lined up. The 30" is going out and I'm wondering what to do when I replace. In a way, it's a waste to have such a big oven because it will only cook one thing at a time well. But I don't know if my roaster will fit in the 27".

my roaster (that I had yrs ago) held a 14lb turkey and it fit in my 24" oven (about the size of a large mw today). 14lbs was plenty for our family of 6 - w/leftovers. It was even enough when we had 3 other family members to TG dinner. With all of the other things to eat w/ the turkey I'm sure we even had some leftovers that day.

if you decide on another 30" oven, center it over (under?) the other one.

try your roaster in the 27" oven.

We have 30" double ovens and could not live without them given the amount of baking, roasting we do. We entertain a lot and our teenagers keep us busy with bake sales!

Agree with desertsteph, before you replace, decide which of the two is more convenient for you and your cooking style/needs.

My roaster fits in the 27". It was a tight, angled fit, but it fit.

how big is your roaster? do you really need one that big anymore? do you cook dinner for a lot of people at the holidays?

The interiors of new ovens keep getting smaller and smaller. I used to have 27" doubles and they were fine. When we redid the current place we were going to go with 27" and the KD really pushed for 30" (that 3" was a really big deal in the layout so it was not an easy decision).

I'm so glad I went with 30" because the interiors are so different now. Make sure you test your pans out in whatever you choose - you don't want a surprise after it's too late to change your mind.

Good point skyedog. I'll check the interior sizes. I'm reusing my cabinets and the one for the ovens is made for a 27". We've just got the one 27" in it now with a microwave.

I'd have to scrap the whole thing, or rebuild it to make 30" ovens fit.

Steph, I used to cook a lot. Lately, not so much, and not just because of the construction. I have a cook's kitchen though and love to cook for a lot of people.

I second what skyedog said. My 1961 oven was only 24" wide, but the interior was actually slightly bigger than in my new 30". Take your biggest roaster and cookie trays and try them in a new 27" oven. If you keep only the current 27", when it dies, you may find that a replacement no longer holds your pans. Can you expand the space where the 30" oven is and put a 30" double oven there? Or maybe one of those single/double ovens, if you don't often use two ovens? As for the 27" oven cupboard, maybe you retrofit it for some other purpose - open shelves, a wine rack, stereo...

Blue Star has the largest interior - you can put a full sheet in the 30 inch oven (but no self cleaning function which is why the interior is bigger)
I went with a Wolf but the Blue Star display was great - they had the full sheet pan inside of the oven - and I went to every other oven in the store - and none would hold the pan!
