| After almost a year, we have the working copy of our blueprints. The architect did a preliminary kitchen design so that we can get things rolling, but it is by no means complete. Any assistance to improve function or flow would be greatly appreciated.
The kitchen sink will be a single basin. I am not planning on upper cabinets on the sink wall due to the large picture window overlooking the view out back. The range wall will have a 36" gas range with either a 36" or 42" chimney range hood. That wall will also house a 30" single wall oven and 36" counter depth frig. I was thinking about putting the wall oven immediately next to the frig rather than having the counter space there so the counter isn't broken up so much. I figure the island will give plenty of landing space for the frig. The island will have seating on the side by the living room and possibly on the end far from the sink. A prep sink will be in the island somewhere. Where to put the diswasher - left of the sink or in the island? Where to put the trash bin pullout? |

Jasper- Here's a bigger copy of your plan...
You may want to switch the fridge and ovens and I believe you should have a 42" vent/hood with a 36" range. Also, the dishwasher to the left of the main sink, will keep it out of the cooking/prep area. And the prep sink should be on the 'lower' end of the island, closer to the fridge. Wonderful pantry and the broom closet is a nice feature, too :)

| Hi, Jasperdog. It's going to look really nice. Love the sink counter and windows. I agree with Lavender about the 42" hood. That's what I have over a 36" cooktop. It's framed in banks of windows and barely looks large enough to be in scale. I wanted it to be lighter in scale, too, not that massive hood look, and even so am very glad I asked the carpenters to place the windows tight to scavenge every possible inch for the hood. I prep on my island opposite the stove, which is only slightly offset to the side of what turned out to be my favorite place to stand and work. So I would arrange to slide the stove farther down the wall, solidly opposite the island and also farther away from the cleanup bustle around the sink (very desirable in itself). Which, of course, would mean losing the break between oven and fridge. It should look good that way too. Also agree with DW to left of sink. It'd be out of the way of the cooks there and also available for family to walk up and set stuff in. However, if you move the stove down, placing it to the right becomes more viable. If you only have one garbage, the other side of the sink from the DW would be one obvious location. Our sink is off the end of the island, like yours, garbage to its right, and the garbage is still very handy to the island prep and stove areas. Some put it in the island, tho, and I wanted to, but we are on septic and don't have a garbage disposal so scrape our plates. |

| There are some problems with having a ref up against a wall that is longer than the ref body. Generally, the doors open up to the side- so the edge of the door has to fit in front of whatever is to the side. Generally, the specs state you need to leave anywhere between ~1.5" up to 15" between the ref and a wall. |
|
| Good start and nice amount of room! All above are right, IMO... - DW to left of main sink I have a couple of layout change ideas, assuming the prep sink is moved to the SE island corner: 1) Put the oven where the fridge is and the fridge up next to it... But check to make sure you won't have a conflict with the fridge door possibly opening against an oven handle, causing damage to either appliance. Shift stove toward both, as LL suggested. 2) Move the ovens where the fridge is. Build a niche for the the fridge into the pantry, so the pantry shelves become L shaped and the fridge faces the island. Move the stove more behind the island. 3) Put some type of tall cabinet or spacer between the fridge and the wall, and build the oven into the pantry with a counter beside for mixer and baking ingredient storage. Across from the island, this could be a nice, somewhat mini, baking center. Again, shift the cooktop down behind the island more. |

| Thank you for the enlarged diagram. I have the frig in the corner so that I don't have to worry about a dent in my stainless steel frig door if oven and frig were ever open at the same time. We did think about putting the wall oven in the wall where the pantry is. Does this seem too spread out? Seems like my work triangle would be quite large with the oven far away from the main sink. |

| In the current layout the window in front of the kitchen sink is a 6' triple casement/fixed/casement. The sink will be a single basin and the dishwasher will most likely go to the left of the main sink. How do I rectify that I can't center the sink on the middle window since that run of cabinets is only 9'10"? By the time I put in a dishwasher, sink base, and corner cabinet I have 22" left to do something with, most likely a trash pullout. Any creative ideas? |

| What type of fridge are you using and what manufacturer? (French door, SxS, single door bottom mount?). This will drive where the fridge can end up, but right now the only fridge that would work completely in the corner like that is a Liebherr. Even Subzero, which can be set for 90, is better at a larger angle for drawer removal. If you do a single fridge door with drawers on the bottom, the doorswing will be away from the ovens so they could be adjacent. (in this position) If this is a SxS it could be a bit closer because the narrow freezer door is always to the left. Then you could do a narrow pullout in the corner to gain more doorswing. You would have to be most careful with a french door and with a single door that swung toward the ovens, but I don't think you would swing it this way. You could see if the sink would be okay lined up against one side of the window, or center it in one of the divisions. With a large set of windows, I don't think this is as crucial as when the sink and window are almost the same width. |
|
| palimpsest, we are planning on a Liebherr 36" single door/bottom freezer. We will probably leave about a 3" fill on the end so the frig door won't be right up against the wall. I'm trying to figure out the sink wall as I don't want to look at a "seam" in the window in front of the sink while looking out. |

| We used a sliding window and it works out better for us than casements did. The old windows were a pair of 32" casements with a center dividern and they were 36" tall. The new window is 6 feet long by 42" high. So, each pane is larger without the casement fittings and the two ends slide across the fixed center pane. It lets in much more air, is easier to open and close and the center pane is unobstructed. I'll also say that I had some concerns about having the casements open on high wind days or it rain was predicted. This is a construction picture, complete with some inspection stickers on the window. Also, it may look like there is something vertical in the center, but those are the awning pipes outside. |

| bmorepanic, thanks for the visual. I had considered sliders and they would probably be more cost effective also. Your sink looks centered on your window. This is what I am trying to accomplish and still get everything I want on that wall. |
