I suppose it could slide around a bit if pushed.

My 36" Miele induction cooktop is not secured by anything. It's dropped in, like a drop-in sink, into the hole cutout of my marble countertop. It's a perfect fit; no sliding around.

the installation instructions for my cooktop have instructions for the clips that were included, and also to add a thin silicone caulk bead afterwards. the original install did not tighten the clips so it slid - we tightened them

I'm not crazy about a perfect fitting cooktop. The cutout should be sized to the manufacturer's specifications, but one without a bit of slop would seem too tight to me.

When the straps are snug, the cooktops don't move even if there is a little play in the cutout.

My 30" cooktop is not attached to the counter. The cutout size is per manufacturer's spec. It hasn't moved in 9 years.
