Yes. How much of an overhang will you have. It makes a difference with the kind of support you will need.

Check the provisions in your contract - some companies do provide supports -
ie: corbels and or steel counterbalance plates - but most Fabricators do not.

Yes, it is normal for you to find your own supports.

I am just a little sad : ( that he did not offer to help
or direct you.
I think sometimes installers forget that this is an
"unknown" for many people having counters replaced or
newly installed.
They don't take the little extra time to explain so that
you as the shopper can help the counter of your dreams.
I know for me my installer walked me through every detail
practically holding my hand to answer every question.
I am sure this installer is a good guy just probably
busy and forgetting that newbies need guidance.

We didn't need any support. The granite sat directly on the cabinets.

Most decorative corbels ARE NOT a substitute for metal brackets to support your overhang. It is always advisable to keep overhangs no more than 9". If your granite person doesn't have a policy of what limit he will install without a support, then he hasn't mastered or done enough to know he should have a policy.

Cabinetfanatic - maybe I am misunderstanding your sentence, but our overhang on our island will be 18 inches...and we have I think 3 corbals to support it.
