For those with spice cabs down to counter flanking cooktop

How far forward do your cabinets sit? In other words, how much countertop is left in front of those cabinets.

Thanks!

Sorry to be no help --- I'm just also hoping to see the answer to your question! I think they are about 12-15" deep. Wasn't sure if "landing space" next to cooktop with one of these is still useful? Anybody have one of these directly next to cooktop (or just a few inches away)?

I think the general consensus is that if you are not going to have adequate landing space with the spice cabinets there, then they are not worth having. I'll have about 18 inches of landing space on either side of mine which is fine for me.

They are a BIG safety hazard unless you have adequate landing space (front to back) beside the range. "Adequate" means at least 15" to each side (full depth) before the obstruction starts. If you are space challenged, a "hearth look" can be achieved with corbels instead of pier cabinets.

Thanks for the response -- never thought about a safety hazard before --- husband is a safety freak too! I love the Crownpoint kitchen #39 --- and my range layout could be similar, but I worried about the landing space like this. Thanks for pointing out the safety issue.

Here is a link that might be useful: Kitchen #39

I also wonder about room for pot handles, etc., since I much prefer to have mine extended out to the sides. I'd feel so claustrophobic with cabinets down beside the cooking surface. Like LWO suggested, we're doing corbels that come down to meet the counter but angle back to the wall so they're not taking anything from the counter.

I don't have the pullout spice cabinets down to the counter but my hood does go down to the counter on the sides. There's not much space in front of the sides and I never use that as a landing space. Where I live code requires minimum of 12 inches between the sides and the cooktop for safety/fire hazard reasons so I think 12 inches is probably adequate. I've found that to be plenty of space for anything I've needed. I have a 36 inch cooktop so there's usually at least one open burner on there too for landing lids, etc.

I actually will have almost 2 feet of landing on either side. It's hard to explain, but I need about six inches of wall which will be support posts flanking the cooktop. My spice cabinets will actually disguise the walls.
