It looks like a recessed panel on the front. The raised part is on the back (inside) of the door, so instead of a thin piece of plywood, you have a heavier piece of wood in the center of the frame.

Ahhhh thanks. Do you end up with the panel positioned shallower in the frame? Apparently I have not paid enough attention to the back sides of doors!

Here are the ones i made in shaker style.

The rails and stiles are exaggerated to 4.5". The panel is planed down so that the raised part is flush with the frame.

We actually have the opposite - a reverse of the shaker/recessed style that the cabinet maker was offering, and yes, it is a raised panel. I found it stuck out less than the regular raised panel doors they had (which DH wanted) so it was a compromise for us.

I immediately thought of pharoah's kitchen when I saw this question. I have to say again pharoah, it's some of the most beautiul workmanship I've ever seen. LOVE looking at your kitchen!

thanks remodelfla, its been more than two years now and i am still not done! Just havent found the right inspiration for the crown molding. almost want to make it with onyx and back light it :)
