subway tile

I have cherry cabinets (med color), light large tile floor, granite is portifino gold (similar to santa cecelia classic, maybe more brown than black in it), island base will be similar to floor color. Wanted to do subways for the backsplash, to let the granite stand out. Only have 16" between counter and cabinets. Question is behind the cooktop - should I just stick with subways? Hood is going in possibly 24-30" from counter top, width is only 30". Have been looking at ideas, know it should be simple. Husband does not like herringbone patern as an alternative. Have looked at the backsplashes on this forum also. Hood will be light color and walls will be a color wash with golds. Any ideas or pics out there?

I think sticking with subways would be fine. There's a lot to be said for consistency

I like the plain subways too but have been looking at some decorative tiles. There is a site called Windsong Tiles that has Celtic design tiles (and other designs too) and some sets of tiles that are intended for a backsplash -- they are really nice! I could be tempted! They will make them up in your choice of glaze too.
