Here is what is done so far with the bricks. I don't know if the bricks match the cabinets or not. There's a lot we can try if she doesn't like the color, and they will darken if she uses a sealer.

Range Alcove
Left to Right Dining room door, fridge, pantry door
Doorways and fridge
Cabinets

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!! That looks gorgeous!!! Wow!!! I am thrilled when my husband changes the oil in my car, but this! You ARE the man.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

gr8day, LOL

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

aktillery- are you talking about the paneled door behind the left arch? That goes between the old kitchen and the dining room. The plan was to close that wall off to gain more wall space in the old kitchen for the new pantry. So no, I doubt that door will stick around. I do know that my wife will place it in the stacks of doors in the block building. She has somewhat of an obsession with old doors.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

And thank you to everyone for the compliments. The brickwork is by no means perfect, but the bricks I was working with aren't perfect either. The color is changing as the mortar is drying and I'm not sure what they will truly look like until after I spray them down with acid and they are completely dry. I'm nervous that she will want crown molding at the top of the brick and I'm not sure there's enough room for it with the keystone. That was a small overlooked issue that I didn't think about until I started looking at the crown mold for the cabinets. I'm done for the day. The humidity is spiked and the temps have soared. A/C might be the next purchase.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Wow.
If you didn't plan that color combination, I'd tell everyone Yes, I did!

That's absolutely beautiful. I'd hate to darken it with sealer, but it is a kitchen, after all.

What is the color of your cabinets?
Christine

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Way to go MortarMixer! You are a talented craftsman. Can't wait to see the next round of pictures!!!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Oh my!! Delicious! This is a surprise for your wife? What a lucky gal! You know...I am a huge crown fan, but I really think it would be almost gilding the lily in this case. I wouldn't worry about it.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Wow! That brick work is beautiful! Can you come to my house? You have made a believer out of me. You can do my kitchen anyway you want and I won't complain one bit! You need to go around the country giving seminars to husbands on how to please their wives!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I love it.

I love brick
and wood
and the cabinet door looks just absolutely lovely with those two elements.

The color of the bricks!

The color of the wood!

It all looks so real. Like a real live person made it. A person who genuinely knows what he is doing.

Thank you for sharing, and I sure hope you are having a grand old time!

Go, MMxr, GO!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Beautiful!!! Thank you so much for allowing us to see your progress--can't wait to see more.

Hole-y buckets.

More please!

Oh--and GO, MORTARMIXER!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Holy moley!!!! You go, guy!!!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

'the best romance novel ever'

I agree!

it's just lovely! I think crown moulding would be too much. it's beautiful in it's simplicity as is. hope your dw agrees with that.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

This is simply superb.

I LOVE the color combo...very fresh and modern and yet with that old world feel.

Absolute perfection.

Keep up the good work and show us more!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Beautiful! LOVE all the little nooks.
To crown the keystone area just stop the crown and do a return of the crown on either side of the keystone. It might just set off the keystone area and look ok. Just above the keystone bring the top part of the crown across and box in under so you dont have a gap.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

The color looks beautiful. The space is very interesting. I think you may need to start a new thread with each new "chapter" post ;) You get a lot of responses. I am going to link your first thread to this one for others to look at if they'd like.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Great job and thanks for posting pictures.
I just hope that your wife isn't reading Gardenweb while on vacation!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I like the color combination with the softer, lighter color of the natural brick. It is a very charming combination. Love your arches too. Both they and the softer colors have softer, time-worn, classic appeal.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Love the soft muted colors of the brick.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Wow, love the arches and bricks. The cabinets are beautiful next to them. Can't wait to see more!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

A big change from your initial thread.
Keep the pictures coming!
You have real talent!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Beautiful brickwork and beautiful with those cabinets. Can't wait to see more.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

The brickwork is phenomenal! Loving the arches. I think the cabinets are a great match to the brick. Nice choice.
More pics, more pics please.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Christine-I'm not sure what the color of the cabinets are. The cabinetmaker paint matched the sample my wife ordered, but can ask him next time I chat with him. I am missing part of a pantry cabinet, so I'll have to go over to his place in the next day or two so I can get these cabinets put in. I think my wife said the sample was more taupe or pink toned, and it matched really well with a piece of pink marble she had next to it. Although I don't see her choosing pink marble for anything.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I saw a brick arch over a cooktop when I visited an older home here a few years ago and fell in love. This makes me wish I had thought of doing it in my house and I fell in love all over again. Beautiful job, Mortarmixer!! I guess I'll have to get in line if you decide to hire out!! I'd re-do my kitchen just to get something like this.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

This is truly beautiful and authentic. Just love the detail!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Beautiful!!!!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Motarmixer! More pictures please!?!?

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I'd appreciate knowing the color, just so I can check in IRL.
I really love your work.

I can't imagine it being ay more beautiful had someone (wasted time and $$ and) had a KD for a magazine doing this.

Beautiful.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I've got $3 of brick in there. Unless I count my time for loading and unloading and moving the brick, and then it could possibly be worth thousands. I'm going to the cabinetmaker's house tomorrow to pick up the rest of the pantry and will find out the color. This total redo will come in under $7k for the entire room as long as my wife doesn't go crazy with granite or backsplash or deciding to replace all of the appliances.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I am soooo happy you are posting and posting pictures. I think it look gorgeous - you are doing an amazing job - I can't wait to see the progress :)

Piaa

 o

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Bumping for MM and photos!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

You are so the man:)

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

The base cabinets are in as of last night on the sink wall. Gas company comes today to check lines and hopefully I can get the base cabinets on either side of the range in this afternoon and the wall cabinets tonight. I'm going to run out of things to do in this room before she gets home, so I will probably have time to work on the pantry. I'll take some pictures tonight to post.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Do you think she has a clue that this is being done? What will you have finished past putting up the cabinets? Will the sink be in and countertops too? Could you please do my kitchen next?

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

So exciting! Can't wait to see the updated pics and really can't wait to see your wife's reaction. PLEASE videotape it!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Still loving this project! Absolutely looking forward to more photos:)

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

You know the psychology of slot machines...give enough to keep 'em coming back but never enough to be satisfied?

I'm pulling for more pics and an update.

Go Mortamixer!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Good luck with the inspection.

Any news on the cabinet color?

I just love your work!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

It was a Sherwin Williams paint match but almost the exact same color as Glidden clay bisque. Here is a picture I took yesterday evening while I was bringing cabinets in. Almost the exact same layout except the cabinet to the left of the sink will be the dishwasher, but I was trying to keep them out of the way. I will get more pictures tomorrow when it's not raining and there is actual daylight. Gas man came and checked all connections and the range is ready to be moved back in once all of the cabinets are in place. I didn't get much done today after spending the afternoon waiting on the gas company and moving the range twice, but I don't have anything but working here planned for tomorrow and will have some extra hands. Hopefully I can get the wall cabinets installed and the range moved back in. And there won't be a finished countertop until my wife decides on something. I'll most likely put some plywood on so the kitchen is semi-functional, but she will have the electric range and a sink in the old kitchen to use as well.

RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

You are absolutely right to do the brick. It's timeless and shows true workmanship.... hard to find these days.

RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

More pictures!!!
Progress???

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

No visible progress today. Since it was cool out, I decided to make my way up to the attic to run some can lights above the range. It's dark in there and my little outdoor wall light would have been quite unwelcome if my wife walked in the door early. She's supposed to be coming home soon, but she called tonight and said the girls loved the beach and they were thinking about staying for another couple days. I go back to work on Monday, so progress is going to stall, but I didn't realize it had already been over a week. Cabinets will be finished up tomorrow, and I'll have to run somewhere to get plywood for countertops. The cabinetmaker still has a few finishing pieces like a plate rack and drawer organizers, but for the most part it will be finished and ready for her final decisions, or will be more to tear out if she doesn't like it.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I don't think you'll be tearing anything out... ;-)

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I agree with Rhome - nothing will be torn out. Good luck MortarMixer!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

you won't be tearing anything out - it's all beautiful! What a wonderful gift for her!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Love how it's coming together!!!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Hoping for some pictures of your weekend project. Sounds like you have a bit more time before The Big Reveal.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I love this thread!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I just read this post and the preceding one in their entirety.

MortarMixer...I'm utterly awed, with your skills, your devotion, your thoughtfulness and attention to your wife's tastes, comments and preferences.

You're way too young for me to even think of you in terms of a spouse, but if I were your mother...I'd be so proud of you.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

The fun part (after the shock wave) will be showing DW the earlier and later posts!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I should have plenty of pictures soon. I took out all of the cabinets today after a drywall friend said he would come over and spray primer on the ceilings and walls to save some time. He's coming tomorrow morning before another job is ready. I'll be at work, so I'll have to hurry and get the cabinets in tomorrow evening. My wife is leaving in the morning, but shouldn't be home until Tuesday evening. She's supposed to call tomorrow evening when she is tired so I can reserve a room for her somewhere. I spent most of today removing cabinets and cleaning up the house so she won't feel like she has to do anything when she comes home. Thanks for all of the kind words. I'm hoping that I can get my wife on here to let you know how if she likes what is done.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Can't wait to see more pictures and the finished product! It is so beautiful so far. Try to get that picture of your wife's face when she first walks in and sees it!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Hanging out, waiting to see more, mortarmixer!
You must be exhausted/exhilarated.
really looking forward to see photos of the room and adjoining areas. With or without photos of your DW's reaction. But it will be fun to read some of her thoughts if she decides to share.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Outstanding brick work, and I love the cabinet color with it. I can't wait to see the next photos.

Bumping for more pics, please.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Waiting here too...

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I haven't forgotten about anyone. My wife returned home last night and as far as I could tell, she loves it. She cried and spent a good hour or two looking around and touching everything. I'm pretty sure she opened every door and drawer to test the soft close which we've never had before. I told her there had been some discussions on here, so she plans on reading through them today. She's still sleeping 14 hours later though.

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

Can't wait to hear what she has to say...and more pictures, of course! Congratulations for pulling this off!

 o
RE: Surprise Kitchen Pics

I can imagine her doing that. What an amazing surprise...Wonderful for both of you, since I know it's as nice to pull off a successful surprise as receive on. Can't wait to see more!
