Sheet metal behind drywall?

I an installing an over the range microwave oven, replacing the old one. Of 4anchors, the 2bottoms will be in studs. Toggle bolts for the others. I am drilling a 5/8 hole for a toggle bolt and hit a piece of sheet metal behind the Sheetrock.

This is on an interior wall with no junction box or water nearby. What did I hit? Can I drill through and continue with te installation?

You hit a protector plate. There is electrical or plumbing ( maybe a vent) behind there. Do NOT drill through it!

Sounds to me like a duct run. A protector plate for plumbing or electrical would be HARD plate metal, whereas a duct is sheet metal.

Place your microwave mounting bracket into position and draw a line on the drywall at the bottom. Remove the bracket, cut the drywall a 1/4" above the line, and remove it. Screw plywood equal to the thickness of the drywall into the studs, then screw the bracket to the plywood. You will leave any ducts or protector plates undisturbed with this method, it will be very secure, and the microwave covers its own mess.
