2014 UPDATED White Painted Shaker Prices

kompy

Two years ago I started a thread to help all of you get an idea of pricing on one of the most popular styles right now. It seems that trend is still going strong. To simplify, this time, I just priced ONE 36" base cabinet with one full width drawer and two butt doors. No modifications, no upgrades,no finished ends, no accessories. All include shipping to the dealer. Some come standard with plywood ends. The average price = $549 Keep in mind, prices vary by region and from dealer to dealer.

Here's the new list. If any of you want to add to this list, please do so.

Shaker Door w/ Slab Drawer
Maple Wood (or paint grade where noted)
Painted Finish
Drawer guides: Whatever comes standard
No upgrades
B36-Butt Doors
Note: All are quoted full overlay...except I priced Flush Inset where noted on a few brands that offer it.

B36-Butt: Cost to Homeowner:

Price - Manufacturer/Series - Doorstyle Name
$370 Medallion Silverline: Lancaster
$371 Debut Estate: Oxford
$386 Aspect Series by Shiloh
$526 Showplace: Concord (paint grade material) FLUSH INSET

Obviously all dealers have different mark-up, but curious what you think would be the average mark-up percentage wise to the homeowner?

Thanks Kompy! I have referred to the original thread many times. One question, with shiloh, would the eclipse line be the same price as the flush inset?

Oooh, I've been obsessively trying to figure out pricing rough estimates on my own to see if my budget is sane without bothering a bunch of people for quotes.

Does anyone happen to have a price for Executive Cabinetry?

I have one from Barker Cabinets you can add:
$459, Shaker door, alder w/ mdf panel, RTA, Frameless
Don't know about shipping but I think most people doing a kitchen would hit their free shipping minimum anyway.

You're welcome everybody. It does help take the mystique out of cabinet pricing a little bit and can help people decide where to start.

I'll add more as they come in. If they want to make this a sticky, maybe we should wait until we get a more complete list and I'll start a new post, so full updated list is at the top of the post.

A few things were shocking to me:
    1. How inexpensive Showplace (paint grade) was compared to other INSET prices.

    2. Aristokraft Benton Birch is less than IKEA and already assembled!

    3. Shiloh's frameless line was so much less than their standard framed line.

4.That KraftMaid does not offer much in shaker that is lower to mid-range pricing. Their Grandview priced out MORE than Showplace's Concord Flush Inset!!!!

    5. Medallion Platinum (INSET) was pretty high on the list! Their Silverline Lancaster, though, is a GREAT value!

    Here are more

Note for Showplace I added in both Full overlay and traditional and noted the difference in cost for shipping on insets (Kompy is closer to that factory- I'm closer to some others)
    $434 Showplace PendletonTraditional OL-
    $508 Showplace Pendleton Full overlay
Note since I'm further from the factory than Kompy Showplace inset becomes $544 by me- also flush or beaded same price, 13 or 14 deep walls same

$545 Elmwood Montana (1 pc MDF) Frameless Wh Melamine box
$584 Elmwood Montana (1 pc MDF) Frameless Maple print Melamine
$630 Elmwood Mission (5 pc) , frameless white melamine
$671 Elmwood Mission (5 pc) , frameless maple melamine
$694 Mountaineer, MRP 10 Frameless Ply
$712 Elmwood, Mission (5pc) Frameless Ply
$765 Mountaineer, MRP 10 Full OL or Flush Inset
$796 Elmwood, Mission (5pc) Flush Inset 3/4” Ply
$1221 QCCI, Whittaker PP, Frameless NAUF ply
$1376 QCCI, Whitaker PP, Inset- 1” frame, flush, beaded elite, or steeplechase

Keep in mind that these are just cabinets- when you start to put together a complete kitchen the differences vary wildly. The more involved the design is- the more likely that a pricier cabinet can start to compare more favorably. Often modifications and sometimes species or specialty finishes are lower charge in one brand than another (for instance QCCI give me maple, cherry, QS or rift Oak, Mahogony, clear alder all the same price)

Another factor is molding and accessories and upgrades- I took a quick look at the 4 mfgs. I have listed and priced an 8ft stick of colonial baseboard, and an 8 ft stick of a mid size cove (2 1/2-3")
Those came out to cost to consumer:
    $136 Mountaineer
    $182 QCCI
    $214 Showplace
    $279 Elmwood

As to accessories how companies charge for them varies. Some add in any upcharges, others do not. OF the ones I deal with Showplace and Elmwood do not add in the species or finish upcharges. Mountaineer and QCCI currently do (supposed to be changing) but then again I have lower and fewer upcharges with QCCI.

Point is use this to target a few brands in your range, then get quotes. Don't avoid the next few up on the list unless you are doing a VERY simple project with NO upgrades. It can cost the same and it almost always doesn't cost as much more as it look.
EDITED to add- I have one project that is currently both in SWP and Elmwood- I checked the pricing (using current Elmwood price the list shows pricing as of June 30th) Despite the fact that there should Elmwood should cost 26.5% more for that job it comes out to 14.8% instead It is still more but not nearly as bad as it looks. -End EDIT

Once you start changing boxes, finished sides, sizes, drawer glides it is likely that a pricier cabinet may be a better bet.

Are we sure every price listed indicates a 50% markup? If so, then the relative pricing is helpful. If not, then some pricing may be misleading. Food for thought. : ).

  • _sophiewheeler
    last modified: 9 years ago

Markup among dealers will be as varied as their costs. Some dealers pay less for some lines because they are closer to the factory or do a higher volume of business with them. Some dealers will have 40%-50%% margins, (NOT the same as''markup) and others might have 20% margins for a repeat business contractor who uses the same 3 floorplans over and over. There is no ''rule'' here. It's a capitalistic market economy after all.

A guideline isn't a bible. It's only relatively useful, and you still need to shop quality and KD in person yourself. Those are FAR more important than price in getting a good result.

  • jakuvall

I used 50%, same as Kompy and would bet LWO did. Just as holly said, only a guide to find brands to look into.
This is NOT an apples to apples list.

There are a lot of variables to what you get, especially in the lower half. Some have soft close drawers standard, some just good full extension, some are an upgrade for one or the other. Some are no charge for finished sides, others charge and as I indicated other costs will vary widely.

Usually when a dealer is considering a new line they look at pricing on 3 or 4 kitchens with exactly the same details.

Booboo on Showplace!!! I did have their latest software downloaded. They had a price increase early this year.
My apologies. Next list we update, Showplace needs to be updated to this. Updating our 20/20 design software is just another one of the tasks we KD's must keep up with! It can be a pain, because he manufacturer does updates differently.

Aries, Thanks for pointing that out. I've been so busy.

So folks, this is just another example of how and WHY prices can vary from dealer to dealer. Not only was my first price too low (incorrect), it was the pricing before the price increase on March 18th. I forgot to add in the wood charge.

So, price prior to price increase, should have been: $526 plus $18 paint (included 50% off specie promo)= $544

The price NOW after the price increase is: $578 (includes 50% off specie promo).

    So that's about a 6% increase.

The overall prices for SP went up 4.85%. Their paint upcharge went up from 5.5% to 7%....so that's about 6.35% price increase.
