Ideas for Kitchen Desk

Hello All! We are doing a "refresh" of our kitchen. Like so many others, we have the oak cabinets that have yellowed over time into that weird orange-honey like color. We also have oak floors so there is way too much oak going on. We plan on installing beadboard on the side of the cabinets, painting the cabinets, replacing the pendant lights, updating the hardware, and (hopefully) installing soft close hinges. After all of that is done we'll see if we want to go ahead and repaint the kitchen or install new backsplash.

My issue is that we have the typical kitchen desk area that we have never used. I am thinking about installing some kind of low shelf so we can move a few of the smaller appliances on the countertop to this area. Does anyone have any ideas how to do this? or have seen this done? Any other creative things to do with that area? We also have cabinets over the refrigerator that is empty because it can't be reached, it makes it worse that the cabinets are recessed over the fridge so it isn't lined up. I already have a butlers pantry where I keep all my cookbooks, do you all have any ideas of what we can do with that area? I'd like to remove the doors and put something decorative up there but I don't want a dust collector.

I put in 2 caves- his and hers. Each has a pull out cutting board that can be used as a desk. The top of each cabinet works like an entertainment center so the doors disappear. The bottom has drawers.

Hi Lexus,
I am back and here are a few pictures - realize this is actually our sun room area - but for some it could be part of the whole kitchen. I could have put an island in here but wanted the window view - so went with a banquette. I also wanted DH to have a place for his "stuff", so built a pair of caves to flank the windows.

Each cabinet has a pull out "cutting board" to use as a desk. I am moving one of Mom's lightweight bar type stools out here to use as needed. The height is too low for standing and too high for a regular chair. - Now just have to find a place for the stool to live when not in use...

Also - I made the bench so I could fold it down to open the window more easily - or if I just wanted to enjoy my full window.

DH gave me music for the kitchen - put it in pull out drawer for now - someday, I will fix it up better - but you could use the drawers for your small appliances to make them easier to access. I do have power in the "cave"
