My blue star has vents on the side so you can't have cabinets next to it. Look at the specs of your range - they should tell you the maximum depth of your cabinets. For my blue star it told me the minimum height for my wood hood (I think 36"). My inspector measures this and will make you move it if it's off by 0.5". Yes, the range sticks out a bit but I'm OK with that.

Most ranges protrude beyond the depth of the cabinets - certainly the oven doors and handles do. Look at pictures in the Finished Kitchens Blog.

I increased the depth of the cabinets next to the stove. Rather than being attached to the wall they are attached to 2x4s. I did this because I didn't want both the stove and frig to be extending out too far and they had to be on the same wall.
