Can painted cabinets be repainted?

We are in the process of getting quotes for remodeling a kitchen on a house we are buying. I love the look of painted cabinets (I want to do white painted cabinets and a dark island - stained or dark paint, not sure yet). I'm just wondering if those painted cabinets can be repainted easily to make them new again, when/if they start looking a bit shabby. This is all new territory for me!

Repaint is easy....but to get a fine finish is not easy......

It's all about the prep...sanding, filling, priming, and caulking. Then the quality of the paint, and the experience of the applier comes into play, but you can have brand new looking cabinets if all goes well!

Thanks for the responses. My cabinet designer highly recommends a cabinet finisher - he said he is the best. I'm going to ask him about this issue and what his thoughts are.
