Recommendations really depend on what level you want to move up to. For example, Pottery Barn is a step up from Ikea and their catalogs are a great resource for deciding on various looks you like. If you have an outlet near you or can wait for sales, their prices are pretty good.

Check around the furniture stores in your area for ideas and even some vendors at flea markets have new items. I've purchased several brand new furniture pieces off of Craigslist too.

Check out jcpenney too. I got my kitchen stools from there and they are reaaly nice and solid.

I didn't give you any advice.. sorry about that. I would check out Overstock.com. They seem to have a lot and the reviews are very helpful in choosing a good item. I'm definitely going to go there after my kitchen is done.

If you give us some information on what kind of style you'd like, if you want table height seating or counter height (I love counter height, it's so much better for entertaining and easier to get in and out of, but maybe not for little kids), etc., that would help.

No help, but what a kitchen! Kosher?

Yes, kosher! I don't think I want counter height since my kids are small. We have a formal dining room so I want something more casual. Somebody had recommended a table with black paint and wood combo. but I'm having trouble finding this. Any ideas?

Great Kosher Kit! We are orthodox also. :) We are building a home as well, and what I plan on getting is a formica table with a top that matches my granite and then table legs. I guess it would be custom. I had a smaller table done in our first house. Really not that expensive if you know where to go. I would not get a wooden table for kitchen. I don't know where you are located but where I live there are stores that do this.

Just interested to know why you wouldn't get a wooden table? Is it because it might damage more easily?

I have had a wooden farmhouse style table with a butterfly leaf for years. It has withstood countless kids, art project, cutting directly on it, hot baked goods, arm wrestling boys... you name it. If you google "farmhouse" table... you'll see countless examples of what you're talking about. Here's an example of what I think you're referring to:

Yeah I personally wouldn't get a wooden one for the kitchen, b/c they can get water stains, etc. Even in my dining room, I have a glass top over the table, to protect it. But wood is basically most of whats sold in all the furniture stores, so maybe I'm wrong.
