No room for caulk where backsplash ends

So, I need to know, is this likely to be an issue.

Before the GC left today, I got home - they are working on the backsplash tile. Before I left for work this morning, we talked about having a small area between the tile and the countertop so that caulk may be put in there.

I came home this afternoon to find that there is no room for a caulk line. GC says that this isn't a problem. But, pictures that I'm seeing online, pretty much everyone has a caulk line between the two surfaces, which is what I think is the correct way to do things. Need confirmation which is right, if both ways are okay, or what, please.
