What are your shelves made of and how thick are they?

Veneer core Maple with a clear conversion varnish. 3/4" thick.

Thanks Kent. One of our cabinet subs we are getting bids from provides particle board shelving that has no veneer. It sounds U-G-L-Y and I'm wanting to see if anyone has something similar. My current shelving is KM---particle board but with a maple-look laminate veneer

Nothing on the particle board? I would suggest looking for someone else. The make boatloads of white melamine shelving, which is probably what you have now, with a printed pattern on it.

THey told me I could paint or stain them. Still thinking they would look yucky.

I would agree wholeheartedly. I think yucky is a nice way to put it.

Sounds ugly to me also!
