I'm not sure what the convention is but we are matching our island stain with some of the other interior stains, particularly the ones in the same open great room space. So these items will match stain wise: island, front door (interior and exterior), beams in the ceiling, newel post and hand rails (in a different room), locker bench top (different room).

The basement bar will have a totally different (much darker) stain.

I'm sitting in my open space kitchen, living, dining room which has red oak floors throughout. I have white painted cabinets in the kitchen. But I have bookcases, coffee table, end tables, media center, buffet, etc. and none of them were purchased together and all the woods have different stains. It all looks good together, kinda like nature.

none of my woods are matching in my kitchen/great room. they include: natural cherry and walnut, grey stained acacia and a dark espresso oak/ash. oh, and the doors are natural alder. sounds like too much but it works.

I like the truffle stain much better than the auburn, so I would use it throughout.

I am not one to be matchy matchy, but if you are going to have wood furniture also I would probably want to have all my built ins the same. A little bit of continuity gives nice resting spots for the eyes.
