The finish on our vertical grain fir cabinets is an oiled finish, called Rubio Monocoat. The cabinets still are new, but the finish is matte, beautiful, and so far doesn't seem to mind being touched with wet hands or damp cloths.

Lynn, I actually have samples of the Monocoat product. Looks quite nice, imho.
Why were you drawn to the Monocoat product over say the Waterlox or just Tung oil?

hello Willinak and ae2ga, just saw your posts. The Rubio Monocoat was the choice of our cabinetmaker, who so far likes everything about it. Others have posted that they liked it on their hardware floors, so it must be pretty durable. I'm not familiar with Waterlox, but I will say that tung oil has a sort of funky smell to it -- we used it to fir beadboard walls in a powder room, and I wish I had known about the Rubio Monocoat then.

I will post pictures of our kitchen cabinets as soon as Photobucket solves some sort of technical difficulty they are having tonight.

ae2ga, here is oiled vertical grain fir cabinetry (and fir stools), done with Rubio Monocoat. It is matte. I have certainly splashed water on drawer fronts and touched them with damp hands and haven't seen any damage.
