Vent hood necessary?

Is a vent hood necessary over a range? We currently have an old Jenn-Air with a downdraft vent, but we plan to remodel. It would be difficult to run a duct over the kitchen and between floors for a ceiling vent, but I'm not sure the downdraft works well enough to get another one. Is a vent a safety factor? Thanks for any input. Connie

While a vent is not an absolute necessity, it is very useful for removing heat, grease, steam, and cooking odors from your kitchen. As you've discovered, the Jenn-Air downdraft doesn't work very well. There are pop-up downdrafts that work somewhat better than the Jenn-Air but if it is at all possible to put in an overhead vent, that is your best option. There's a faq on ventilation on the appliance forum as well as various posts on different hoods.

it's not necessary, but recommended. it's not a safety issue. if you're using a regular range/cooktop rather than a pro-type one with high BTU output, it's less necessary.

but a good vent system adds to your quality of life, taking food smells, grease, and steam out of your kitchen. you'd be surprised what contractors can do--they can run vents up between walls, etc...could you punch out through an exterior wall rather than vent up through the roof?

Agree overhead far superior to downdraft, but if downdraft is the ONLY option, would strongly suggest induction rather than gas range. Downdraft is extremely effective at pulling heat away from gas burners, greatly reducing the cooking power of burners close to the vent. Since induction heats by direct contact there is no convection issue to deal with. But, overhead still much better.

Do a search on this forum with a search term like range hood, exhaust, or something like that. Plenty of informative postings. I agree with posting put in so far. If you're going through the trouble & expense of renovating, do it right. Get a proper rangehood that exhausts to the outside, and make sure you adequately power it. It's worth the bother & expense.
