Personally, I would tile behind the chimney hood first. You never know when you might have to replace the hood, and when you do, you can choose the shape and model you want and not be restricted by having to hide the lack of tiling in behind it.

The amount of labor to cut tile all around a hood would be costly, I would think. It's a cleaner line to tile first and put the hood up second IF the installation specs for the hood allow for that. I can't imagine why they wouldn't.

Good point annettacm, I am going to read those installation instructions right now.

I had my hood installed for a few months while I decided on what backsplash to put in. When it was time to tile, the HVAC sub came out and removed the hood and confirmed with the tile installer exactly where the mounting bolts went, so the tile installer could tile the whole wall except those spots. After the tile was in, the HVAC sub came back and reinstalled the hood.

So, there's more coordination work between different subs, but I think the result is worth it.

Yeah, I had the same question, then found out our contractor tiles behind the hood, which makes sense for all the reasons above. He did want to know the final height we wanted so that the bracket could go in first.

Tile first!

We tiled the entire wall and mounted the hood on the tile. First it was easier to do it this way and if we ever changed the hood there would be no issues with the tile.
