Does a pendant light need a diffuser?

I'm interested this pendant light, which doesn't have a diffusor. There are many more that do include one, so now I'm wondering if it's necessary. It'll hang over my kitchen peninsula - will it shine down on me like a spotlight if it doesn't have a diffusor?
