Kevin - corbel question - need help again

If I use corbels to support a 12 inch overhang that will have 2 cm granite on it...don't I have to have something "substantial" ie strong to attach them to? The top is not a problem but the cabinet under the counter doesn't have any "substantial" areas...it's just cabinet material. And isn't that where the stress ultimately goes to?

BTW, these are 1980's cabinets that are being refaced.

I'm sorry for being dense about this and being a PITA but I don't want to pay lots of money for it and have it crack or come crashing down. It's taken me more that 5 years to convince DH that I need/want this kitchen! He's fighting & screaming all the way LOL!

no expert here at all, but saw some picture of fabricators using metal plates to support the overhang, instead of corbels.

Or, perhaps fasten a piece of lumber on the other side of the cabinet if there's space. And sandwich the cabinet material with corbel and that support lumber piece.

I'd agree with no_name (never thought I'd say that!). There are several threads on this in the forums with great pictures.
You wouldn't need to add much support to the inside of the cabinet, even a 1" thick board running top to bottom would be enough to get the screws into. I had the same concern for the middle bracket here (12" overhang):

Yep, that's what the cabinet guy suggested and will do. Plus, he will make the corbels for me! What a guy!! We're only gonna put in 3 corbels. That should be sufficient. I can't wait til this is OVER with! I'm stressed out & haven't even started yet! Even starting to wish I'd never started but we're past the point of no return, soooo....
