We use Hafele foot pedals for a pull-out trash. Hands free. Out of site. It also opens from the other side of the island as well for double acces:

The hafele are supposed to work only for frameless cabinets but our cabinet maker was able to modify easily to work for our framed one.

Thanks. I'll have to see if I can modify it for my existing cabinets. Do you find that the foot pedal ever gets in the way, or would it if it were under the sink?

It is in the middle of the cabinet and really tucked under the toe kick so I would not think it would get in the way when standing at the sink since you probably don't put your feet right in the middle of your sink.

I am just now seeing this. Beagles, where did you find your foot pedal? I called Hafele today and they said it only worked on a certain brand of cabinet and couldn't be used unless I was installing the cabinet that it came with, in other words not as an aftermarket add-on. Someone rang my doorbell right then, so I didn't get the chance to ask for more details. I see that yours is silver, too.

I have been thinking of putting a big wide cup pull or appliance pull at the bottom of the door so I can open the cabinet with my foot -- that's how much I want a hands-free trash can. There isn't a good place to set out a freestanding one in my kitchen, and I don't feel quite up to spending the money for the Servo-drive at the moment.

Awesome idea! I hate touching the trash knob when my hands are dirty/contaminated. I often use a paper towel to do it.

Beagles-I love the idea of a single tash receptacle on each side of the island instead of two together. How do you utilize your drawers on the end of the island between your trash cans? Thanks.

Great idea Northcarolina. My cabinets are partial overlay so I don't think either of these will work.
