No pictures, but have you considered a slideout? Someone (maybe Imperial, but it's been a while so don't trust me) makes a slideout that accepts a strip of wood trim to make it vanish when slid back. Then you don't need to bump out anything.

Slideout is a good idea.

I can't find the photo now, but I once saw a kitchen where the cabs hiding the hood were either black or a dark wood, with a big honkin old fashioned clock on the face. Very cool, and it kind of read like a grandfather clock rather than a hood.

Just a built in wood hood, with one of those fan insert things, the guts, with lights.

The look I want is just a solid row of upper cabinets, sorta kinda. It could even have corbels and a little fancy.

Have you looked at the cabinet manufacturers websites such as Omega, Woodmode, Medallion to get some type of a picture.....

I did a search for vent hoods on Houzz. Check out the 5th one down on the first page. It's stained instead of painted and somewhat fancier than what you want, but if you did it without the corbels and fancy trim, I think it's what you're describing. You can also look through the other pages of the search. HTH!

I agree you'd want to bump it out--the one pictured isn't going to have very good coverage. But then it'll look like a hood. :)
