Will a Farmhouse Sink fit in an Ikea Akrum 30" Sink Cabinet?

Looking to add a farmhouse sink to an Ikea 30" sink cabinet. The manuf. says the cut out will fit since the sink is 27.5" but I'm not sure if this sink is for a Farmhouse style. I saw only a 36" on display at Ikea that had a farmhouse sink in it. They guy at HD said it would not fit unless the sink was specifically a FH style. If that is true, how do I make it work- e.g., cut and modify the sink, use a different box and add the Idea door?

Yes, it can be done, but you will need a bit of a hack. (See my step-by-step hack at the link below for details and photos if you are interested in doing this.)

Whether or not you will need to cut the sides down depends on a few things - are you planning to undermount? In your post, you give 2 different dimensions for the sink (you say 27.5" and then you say 29.8"). Which is correct?

The inner dimensions of a 30" Ikea cabinet are 28.625". So if the sink is 27.5" wide close to the top, it will fit without cutting down the sides. But if it is 29.8" at the top lip, it depends on your mounting strategy and how much the sink sides taper.

My sink is also 10" deep, so I needed a filler piece and used 18" high doors below. Had I flush-mounted, I probably could've used a 24" door.

So really, you just need the complete specs of your sink, any 30" Akurum base cab (the sink base is not special since the cabs don't come with fronts), and a bit of creativity!

Farmhouse sinks are too dep for standared sink bases. They require specialty bases.

It can work with some modifications.

We hacked a 30" IKEA base cabinet to support our 30" apron-front farm sink. We just cut away the front of the cabinet and made a "cradle" for the sink to sit on. Since we went with custom doors, we did not need to worry about IKEA doors fitting underneath, though that wouldn't necessarily be a problem.

We used the 30 inch Kohler Whitehaven and it fits perfectly in the 30 inch sink base. You do have to make a frame inside the cabinet to support the sink but you don't have to cut the cabinet to make it fit.

The one mistake I made was buying the tall apron. The normal doors don't fit and I'll have to replace them with 18" high doors. The shorter apron probably would have been fine.

how did the kohler sink work out? i did the same thing and bought the tall apron version of the sink and now bought the 18" cabinets to compensate for the difference. did you have to do any special hacks to support the sink after install?

We also followed jenswren's tutorial to fit a 36" stainless apron front sink in a 36" IKEA sink cabinet.

Yes, I realize that. I meant here on the Houzz site - or perhaps on the IKEA Hacker's site. It would be great to see exactly how to adjust the non-apron sink cabinet to fit an apron sink.

We have to do it nonetheless, so I might take pictures and post if I can't find anything else. Our sink is not as heavy as the 30" sink inserted into into a 30" cabinet, so the framing requirements should not be as stringent. Plus, the methodology there was to combine two cabinets together.

Yes, but note that unless you are retrofitting into old cabinets, the new Sektion cabinets are somewhat different than akurum.

Good observation, but we do have Akurum. We may have just gotten a Sektion farmhouse sink cabinet - if it weren't for the fact that it didn't match our other cabinet frames nor are the Edserum doors close enough to match our Liljestad - even if we could jerry-rig them to fit onto the cabinet.

Am so waiting for jenswrens post! :-D
