Try a mix of two parts General Finishes "Java" plus one part "Georgian cherry" (or other dark reddish color). If too brown, use more cherry, and vice versa. On your sample board, allow two coats before judging.

I refinished my oak floor using Waterlox. I combined Minwax English Chestnut stain with a 4:1 ratio Waterlox to Minwax. 1 coat of original sealer, 2 coats satin finish.

Here is a tip I learned from my floor people. First have them wet the floor with water, it opens up the pores of the wood and they accept more stain.

We first put on Minwax Special Walnut, then it was not dark enough so we re stained with Dark Walnut. I like the effect. Here is a link to my Family room to see it.

My floor guys were a little bit stubborn. Total wood
purists and they did not like dark floors. They
kept asking me "Are you sure?" or saying
"Dark floors are so ugly."

It was hard to convince them that I wanted dark, dark
floors. Even today 6 months later my DH and I love
our floors and could easily have gone even darker.

The link below explains our saga. Maybe this is not
the case for you. Maybe it is just a matter of finding
the right stain. But for us it was not the stain issue
it was the floor guys are not used to going dark.

We did not pop the wood first. This is a great method
but it does show the lines in the wood more. Those
rings, or movement becomes even more pronounced. This
is fine if you like it, we wanted a more even color
across, with some dark movement from the lines.
We had a mix of white and red oak floors.

Thanks junkie. A LOT of time and effort since it was a diy project. But since we weren't living there at the time, it was something I could do at a reasonable schedule.

Well done willow, that renovation just feels comfy. Beautiful colors on the floor. I agree with boxerpup, I love dark floors. I would have gone a little darker with mine, but I had to compromise with my wife, shes the master decorator.

I am using 2 parts ebony to 1 part red mahogany (minwax) on my floors. Yes, my flooring guy is shocked but I don't care. I just finished staining my stairwells last night and they are a nice deep warm brown with a hint of red undertone.
