CHANGES IN THE KITCHEN
A survey by the National Kitchen and Bath Association
http://www.nkba.org/
predicted trends that are on their way for 2014, and some of them may surprise you.
For example, painted cabinets are growing in popularity, and 61% of the kitchen designers surveyed said painted finishes other than white will score the biggest increase in 2014.
'People are letting their personality come through in their kitchens,' Harris says. 'They're using bolder colors and are even choosing to have their cabinets painted in reds, greens and blues.'
As for countertops, granite remains a strong choice, but engineered quartz is growing significantly.
By the end of 2013, granite and engineered quartz were just one percentage point apart as the top choice among kitchen designers.
Engineered quartz is a man-made product that consists of 90% to 95% quartz crystals combined with resins and pigments.
It has most of the qualities of granite but doesn't have to be sealed each year.
It also comes in a wide variety of colors, from reds and blues to natural earthy colors. Its patterns also can mimic the look of concrete.
Look for it under names such as Caesarstone, Silestone and Zodiaq.
'Homeowners are moving away from the dark neutrals of granite,' Harris says. 'There are other countertop choices out there, and granite just isn't very distinctive anymore.
'It could prove to be the Harvest Gold of the millennium.'
