Engrain wood countertop - thickness?

Thanks to some great recommendations here, we are ordering a wood top for our island through Engrain (http://engraintops.com/). Trying to decide between 2' or 3' thickness. I love the look of the thicker top. It's only a few hundred dollars more, but kitchen designer is advising to go w/ 2' for the visual of it not sitting up yet another inch higher than the perimeter counters (which will be standard 1' granite). Anyone on with a couple inch difference between island top and perimeter? Does it bother you, create a weird visual etc.? It's only an extra inch so it doesn't seem like a big deal to me? Are there other considerations I'm not thinking of?

Here is a link that might be useful: Engrain
