You need a code minimum of 36", counter to counter. 48" is better. 28" is WAY WAY too small of an opening.

Are the cabinets basically running into those little walls on either side, as in, are you asking how close the front of the cabinets can be to the side of the doorway to your dining room like this?

Is there going to be trim on the kitchen side (bigger than that in the photo) or just a drywall corner? In the photo it looks like they chose to have the distance from doorway to cabinet front be about the same on either side but, looking at the photo, I'm not sure it's a huge deal since the countertop on one side makes it look quite different.

LWO I think the original poster means each Wall on the side of the opening is 28.5 and 26.5 respectively.

The opening looks to be about 60"

I would make the space between the edge of the cabinet and the doorway even on each side.

LOL yeah robotropolis and ineffablespace nailed it. It's like the picture above.

There will be no trim, just a drywall corner. The opening is about 6 1/2 feet after drywall goes in. Looks like I need to pick up one stud on my way home from work today to add to the right side and even up the size on both sides. Thanks, I've been going nuts trying to settle this one and it's suddenly become a lot more important because drywallers will be here within the next few days.
