size/number of pendants for 10 x 5 island?

I want the Clemson pendant from RH, which comes in 8,14, and 18" diameters. I pretty much eliminated the 8" size. I think either 2-3 for 14" or 2 18". The kitchen is open to the family room so the pendants will be very visible from anywhere in the 'great room' living area. The overall kitchen space is around 21 by 15.

we are still at drywall stage so I can't do the balloon trick yet.

First you must decide how many pendants of a given size are necessary to cover the entire length of the island you are trying to light. In your case I would lean towards 3, 14" pendants. With that in mind the basic premise is that if you have two pendants you want to divide the total length of your island into two equal sections, if you have three pendants you want to divide the total length of your island into three sections so on and so forth. From there you aim to place one pendant in the middle of each of those sections. If the total length of your island is 120", if you choose to utilize three pendants you will have three sections of 40". The center of one pendant should be placed directly in the middle of the island at 60". The center of each pendant on the sides should be hung approximately 20" in from the outer edges of the island. That will leave a space of 40" between the center of the pendants and 26" between the outer edge of each pendant if you go with 14" pendants. This setup will make the most efficient and effective use of light while covering the entire island. If you need any clarification please don't hesitate to ask. My island is 4x7 and I chose two Clemson 14" inch pendants. I agree that three would be the right number for you. I will look for a photo and upload to give you a sense of how it looks in my kitchen. They appear well made and I have no regrets with that purchase.

This is a pic I had saved from Houzz. This island is 8 ft. 3" x 5 ft. with three 13" pendants. Not exactly your dimensions.

thanks! I was working the numbers a little bit, trying to figure out the conventions for pendant placement. Please correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I've figured:

Convention is to place pendants 15-18" from the edge of the island (I'm assuming they mean the edge of the pendant not the center of the pendant) Perhaps 18" is better, but for sake of my model let's say 15". If that's the case, and I place one pendant at the exact center of the island- 60", and the other 2 pendants 15" from the edge of the island, that leaves 24" between the EDGES of each pendant, that seems to be about the minimum distance recommended between each pendant. Or 38" between the centers.

Does that seem to work? I think I could mock that up in my current kitchen just to see if I like that spacing, knowing I won't get exactly the right scale as my peninsula is only 8ft wide, not 10.

My husband thinks 14" is too big.....but we don't have a lot going on in our kitchen for focal point. Right now it's the backsplash which will be calacatta gold. The cabs will be white true shaker (maybe white dove or simply white, along those lines), dark non busy perimeter, light non busy island with stained cherry island cabinetry. I think the lights could make a nice pop of bling in the space.

Thank your for clarifying the conventions! I was off by a couple of inches. I think the 26" spacing between edges will be ok....hopefully not too crowded looking- what do you think?

Thanks Romy! I think what I want will actually work. Now I have to wait for the sale again....since it's now over. :(
