I painted my honey oak kitchen cabinets with semi-gloss (I personally hate honey oak).
Just make sure you clean the cabinets well with TSP to remove any grease, lightly sand for adhesion (use a tack cloth to remove all sanding dust), and use a good primer. Then I did 3 coats of CIL Smart semi-gloss in Classic White, lightly sanding between coats (again using a tack cloth each time). Keep the coats thin. Don't "glop" on the paint.

I love how much brighter my kitchen looks.

Satin. My old honey oak cabinets were painted professionally, although I did add new doors and drawer fronts to update the look. If you look really closely, you can see the grain on the original boxes, but it's generally unnoticeable.

Semi-gloss is really shiny to me. Satin has a luster than imparts some life without being shiny.

Some people like glossy sheen, some sparkle. I prefer the more subtle luster of a satin. BM's satin is quite shiny. Companies differ.

Test the advance first and do a lot of research before all that work. You might find it difficult to work with. There is also a yellowing factor to consider with that type of paint. How much light is in your kitchen? Lack of natural light can cause it to yellow quickly. How much I don't know.

We used the Advance Satin on a table recently, and will be painting cabinets with it this week. I like it better than semi gloss, and it won't show grain or flaws as bad. The BM clerk said there would be no difference in the way the two finishes would clean. He also said it wouldn't yellow. It's a hybrid paint, but it cleans up with water.

There have been reports of yellowing with Advance which is something to consider when choosing it. If you like satin, Cabinet Coat also a BM product is really great. That's what I used and it levels out very well and won't yellow over time.
