pot light placement

Hi All - Our kitchen remodel is progressing and today the pot lights were placed in the ceiling. They are set 30 inches out from the wall, to the center, even in front of the double wall ovens and the built-in refrigerator. That puts the edge of the light just a few inches from the cabinets in these areas. Does that sound right? So far our cabinets are simply markings on the floor so we can't really tell how it will look but it just feels like they're too close. We have other lights to cover the counters so that's not really a concern. What do you think?

They should wash down the front of the uppers. 15''-18'' from the wall is ideal, depending on the projection of the crown used. Then under cabinet lighting, and some semi flush mounts or pendants added to the mix are needed also. Lighting needs to be in layers.

I'm headed to bed, but I used 30 in and am very happy. I can post my plan and some pics tomorrow. You can search here too, I have posted them before. My meds kicked in, so I can't really compose that complicated a post at the moment!

They have renovation can lights these days and I highly recommend their use. The electrician roughs in the Romex in a loop, the drywaller covers it then after the cabinets are installed, the electrician cuts the perfect placement hole, fishes for his wire, and connects the can.

Several months ago, I did some attic time bailing an electrician out of trouble on my cabinet install because the wall oven covered the can. This is impossible with the new lights.

By the way, the first time I heard of this I thought it was one of the most stupid things I'd ever heard of. After the first installation, on our walk-in closet remodel, I was hooked.

Lights after cabinets; it's the only way to go.

Hi,
My can lights were placed at 27" from the wall, so they wash the fronts of the base cabs. The cans were designed to be general light, not task light, which is 4" cans above the sinks, under-cabinet xenon, and the very nice 4@20w halogens in the vent hood. Cans are not the best task lights because in most cases you're working in your own shadow.

That wasn't in PB, so here's a second post with pics of how it actually looks. We were pretty close to the plan but some lights were a few inches to the right or left to accommodate beams.

First pic has the ULC on too, so the full lighting effect:

Those were just the "I'm so excite things are working" pics, I haven't taken nice reveal pics yet.

Lighting in the current kitchen is a major problem. Can you recommend information sources I can research before i start my remodel. Something that would expand or elaborate on Hollysprings useful comments?
