We're planning on doing tile alone, no counter material backsplash. I'm not sure why they think that would be a problem.

You do not have to put in a backsplash of any size in the same material as the countertop. Your tile installer will use a silicone/caulking type material where the tile meets the counter. It's tinted to match the grout.

I wouldn't use any counter material if you are planning a tile backsplash. It will be caulked and your grout sealed. Personally, I think it looks better not to have the counter material on the wall. Good luck with your renovation.

We laid subway tile all the way down to the granite. Great clean look. The counter guys didn't silicone the granite to the wall, however. I caulked it after the tile install.

Which do look do you prefer?

The trend I have seen is without. Even those choosing
no backsplash. But if you like the look go for it.
