I think it's same as granite - 2cm requires plywood subtop and 3cm does not.

Not only does solid surface not need a full sub top, installing same will void the manufacturer's warranty.

Corian and other solid surface manufacturers recommend cabinet perimeter strip underlayment or setting the solid surface directly on cabinets secured with dime sized dabs of silicone every 18". Similar and equal to stone and estone, trivet use against heat is recommended. Full underlayment traps heat which is why it is prohibited.

Section 9.1 of the DuPont Fabrication and Installation Manual:

âÂÂDo not use full underlayment. Studies done by DuPont have proven that for horizontal applications, ýâ (13mm) Corian sheet material is better used with frame support for, e.g., heat dispersion as per Graph 9.1.A.

Be sure to make allowances for expansion of support material from heat or humidity.âÂÂ

I didn't mean to suggest that you mistated Dupont's recommendation Trebuchet. I'm saying that Dupont's recommendation doesn't make sense. The cynic in me thinks that Dupont may have intentially planted this bogus recommendation as an excuse to invalidate warrantees for unrelated issues.

Anyhow, Ceasarstone and Silestone make no such stipulation, so I guess if nothing else this is a good reason to go with them instead of Corian.
