Maintenance for Travertine backsplash...?

Posted by annesv (My Page) on

I love the look of the tumbled travertine backsplashes. Although, I can picture me splattering tomato sauce on it and ruining it. For those of you who have them, how do you keep it clean? Is it much more work to maintain than ceramic tile?

Thanks

Bump. . . I'm wondering the same thing . . .

Mine is about 14-15 months old. So far all I have had to do is wipe it with a damp sponge. Spaghetti sauce, etc., wipes right up. Down the road I may have to reseal it. hmmm... I guess I should look that up!

I have the same experience as chicagoans....mine is honed and filled travertine but I just wipe up coffee/spaghetti sauce spills with a sponge - sometimes days later. I haven't found that it stains. Also, I am bad and still haven't sealed it. I guess I should do that....

It's been in since November and has been great.

I have tumbled Travertine subways and Honed Limestone mosaics for about a year now. Believe me I was worried about the same thing! We just sealed it with whatever was recommended by the tile store and that's it. I cook allot of spaghetti sauces and it just wipes clean. I wear glasses and have sometimes missed spots if I don't have them on while cooking and the stain still wipes off.

Do you suppose it needs to be sealed once a year like some granites? Maybe I could put them on the same schedule.

Yes. They say every 6 months to a year.

Ours wipes down but does have some dark staining, possibly from water (it's just behind our sink---about 2.5 years old). However, we are also not as careful as we should be with it since we've known since about six months in that it would be coming out when we pull the rest of the kitchen out, as nice as it is. (It's one of the cosmetic fixes the PO put in before selling, so we have granite and travertine tile atop cabinets that are falling apart...*sigh*)

I don't know if ours is honed or tumbled or what, though---it's not shiny and I believe it came from Lowe's. The grout is definitely not sealed since it absorbs a lot of water; the tile only has the few stained spots.

Ours is about nine months old and so far no problems. We sealed it well and also prop a glass cutting board against the B/S behind the cooktop when frying or simmering pasta sauce. The back edge of the cooktop is barely more than 3" from the travertine mosaic.

My tumbled travertine backsplash is 7+ years old. I applied 3 coats of Aqua Gold 15 (water based) sealer on it at the time of installation. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING has stained it. A swipe or two with a Mr Clean Magic Eraser and it's gone! A "swipe", no scrubbing involved :) I haven't had to reseal yet.
