exposed beam ceilings

Hi all. I wonder if anyone has themselves, or has photos of, kitchens where the beams/joists are exposed, preferably painted? The kitchen in our 1870s house has a 7 1/2 foot ceiling that we'd like to expand by removing the ceiling to give us a bit more "perceived" head room. There is just attic space where we currently store things above, but I don't think we would expose or remove the ceiling all the way up to the roof...we'd like to keep the attic.

But DH is concerned about how to do lighting and how it will look overall. I did a google images search, but am having trouble coming up with anything. I remember there was a kitchen in one of the shelter mags I subscribe to, but I can't for the life of me find it, or remember which mag.

Thanks for any help!
