Windows, Windows, Windows - Please Post Photos

Posted by kitchenkrazed09 (My Page) on

We are in the process of designing our new kitchen. I'm looking for photos of a wall of windows, preferably over a sink, with no upper cabinets on the sink wall. Please post whatever you have. The more windows, the better! Thanks!

kitchenkrazed, we have no uppers and lots of windows. It was a priority for us to get as much light into the kitchen as possible.

Here are a couple of views.

More pix linked below.

HTH!

There are some pics in this "counter height window" thread (some may have cupboards but many don't).

peytonroad!!!!! holey moley that's stunning! I want to see more pics! (Actually I want a personal tour of the whole house. Party at Peyton's!) Did you do the design?

Hi Willow - and thks! The cabinets were painted by Homestead House Paints - the colour is Tapestry. They did a beautiful job of handpainting the cabs with a four step process: staining; waxing (for distressing); painting and glazing. We love the way the colour changes with the light.

I also realised I put the wrong link above - the one below takes you directly to the kitchen! :-)

What beautiful photos! Elizpiz - I love your kitchen, especially that gorgeous hood. Peytonroad, those windows are amazing. And Boxerpups, I always love the photos you post!

Quick question for those with the kitchen sink in front of a wall of windows: Where do you put your dishtowels? Can't seem to find a good place for it. We're still early in construction, here's a sketch:

For the OP, one of my favorites:

After those gorgeous pics I'm hesitant to post a pic heh heh but here's a few of ours...the first one is dark (it's hard to take pics of the kitchen because it's so light filled due to all of the windows). We've since added window coverings and built the back of the bench seat in the bay window. On 2 sides of the kitchen we have no uppers due to all of the windows and the massive hood (which doubles as a bomb shelter):

Obviously a construction photo in progress...but it's better light:

I LOVE everyone's windows and kitchens, and I want to come to Peyton's party also!

These double casements were just installed yesterday. We ordered three, but had to settle for two to allow enough space for other things. Those cabinets are going. The only wall with anything above counter will be the fridge wall.

My main inspirations were erikanh, jenswrens and these steel windows from Things That Inspire. We didn't come close to any of these, but we like ours anyway. They fit the scale and scope of our house and renovation.

boxerpups, great pix as always! I had some of the same ones in my inspiration file.

pps7, your elevation looks a little limited in space for a towel rack. The door of the sink cabinet looks like the most likely, unless there is some clever disguise for the wall to the left of the windows. Is that a LS in the right corner? Is there a possibility there? I am planning to put a bar in one of the pullouts near the sink.

igloochic, try this -- point your lens at the dark part just above the window, push the shutter half way, then move your camera down to center the window in the lens and take the picture. If that is overexposed, try right on the edge of the window. Also try the same things with flash, if you haven't.

This has always been a favorite of mine, I love the shelf idea and the rain glass is a good concept for those with less stellar views, in the city for instance:

It's a good thing I found GW. Just about now I would be freaking out that I choose to do a white kitchen with a wall of windows and no uppers. (it's unheard of in my area and I've never seen a kitchen like that IRL). But on GW, it's no biggie :). And I get to see great inspiration pictures.

jsweenc, That is a lazy susan to the far right. DH wants to put the towel on a hook to the far left, but that's 3 feet away from the sink. I think I will hang it on the pull out for the trash. Somehow that feels dirty though.

I don't want to hijack, but this seems like an issue relevant to having no uppers. If there is lots of base cabinetry, it's no problem, but pps7, with the space you have, you are a bit limited. The same thought about using the trash pullout flashed through my mind as well, but I had the same reaction to putting it there. The other options I see that are not 3' away:

- mount a bar just under the window (how high above counter are they?)
- Under the sink
- Attach a magnetic one to a metal surface nearby, if there is one
- Mount a swinging bar between windows

- Put a towel rack on the counter
- Do you have any space where you can do this? How wide is the trash pullout? Could you make it a little narrower?

I like this one the best if you can get it in somewhere.

Here's mine. We actually had one window removed with our reno. It was on the other side of the kitchen, though, and had no view, so I don't miss it at all. I now have my much-needed pantry there instead. I really like having the openness of a big wall of windows. It makes for a nice place to work in.

For pps 7 -- one more pic of a towel rack under the sink. You have to go through all the pictures; it's almost at the end, just after one of the trash pullout pictures. If you put your mouse over the bottom arrow of the thumbnails and leave it there, it should scroll on its own without you having to click.

Not sure it's any better than any of the others; you'd have to open the door, pull out the rack, slide the rack back in and close the door. I personally would prefer to have one mounted to the inside of the sink cabinet door.

Great photos, guys! pps7 - what about the dishwasher handle? I planned to have a drawer for all of my unused towels, aprons, etc. (which is not too near the sink) and then have a rack for towels that need to dry on the inside door of the sink cabinet, like jsweenc mentioned.
