In-counter compost buckets

I LOVE those in-counter compost buckets that some of you showed in the "neato" thread! Right now we just throw scraps in a bowl and it lingers on my counter until somebody finally gets tired of looking at it (or the fruit flies start showing up). I showed this to DH and he isn't on board with the in-counter bucket. For one, it would have to go over the top of a lazy suzan and that would hinder your ability to put stuff on the top shelf, and two, he doesn't want to risk having another place for water to seep in the laminate countertop. I agree these are good arguments. My kitchen *is* small so storage space is precious. Should I give up this idea or is there a way we could make this work? Maybe there's something I haven't considered.

I'm posting a picture of my kitchen as it is now. Cabs and countertops are ordered and they're going in next month. The layout will be the same with some tweaks. Not sure if you all remember my other posts, but there used to be low hanging cabs over the peninsula. We took them out last week and now I'm wondering why I didn't do this years ago?

Sorry I don't have an overhead layout. Starting from the fridge and going around, it will be an 18" pull out wire rack, stove, lazy susan corner, sink, lazy susan corner, 18" 4 drawer stack, dishwasher, 30" pots & pans drawer. Any way to stick in a compost bucket??

If I'd had "clear space" for it, I would have done one, absent that, I keep mine under the sink (covered, charcoal filter, biodegradable bags). I would definitely NOT put it over the lazy susan, since that would interfere with the stuff on the top shelf.

I would not give up counter and cupboard space for it. I do not always do all of my prep in the same area, so I like being able to move it around to wherever I'm working. Mine is a pretty stainless bucket, with charcoal filter. It looks fine sitting on the counter of the bottom shelf of my stainless prep table.

Ours is from Lee Valley. It hangs on the inside of our sink base door and I LOVE it there.

I had the Lee Valley green compost container for years. It was ok but it holds so much compost by the time it got emptied it was all pretty gross and then washing out the container was yucky.. Then there are the fruit flies. They drove me crazy in the summer. Now we use the disposable compost friendly paper bags and have a dedicated space in the freezer for the bag. Perfect solution all around. Nothing gets mushy and gross and absolutely no fruit flies. Love this solution!!

I have the inset compost container. There has never been any water seepage at all. If the countertop guy does a good job in cutting the hole, there will be no issue. There is another version that is not inset but rather sits from above - I didn't get that one.

But we compost a lot - we also have a pull out drawer that we use for more compost.

I used to use the green bucket before we got this - it's okay, much better than the cylindrical bins that don't hold as much.

I don't have a place to cut a hole - all my cabinets have top drawers. I thought about it, but decided I'd rather have the storage space. I actually use a bathroom vanity (with 2 custom drawers where the blind panels came) as a prep area (I'm short), the compost container is a lidded canister with a seal right next to the coffeepot on that counter. Never a problem with fruit flies, and I like that it's not huge (so we empty it more often) and can go in the DW.
