Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

I would just look this up in past threads but older topics are not being found :(

What do you think is the best way to clean hardwood floors? Our regular broom scratches them.

I use a Bona Kemi mop with cleaner, or any microfiber mop (or cloth) with the cleaner.

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

We use a soft broom, a Miele cannister vacuum with a floor brush (awesome vacuum!), and when necessary we mop with a dollop of vinegar in warm water.

I like the Swiffer Vac. Gets the dust and the chunks and it's cheap. The guy who refinished my floors actually recommended it and I've loved it since we first got it 2 years ago. I even put an outlet in my broom closet just so I could plug this baby in to charge.

I got tired of using my big vacuum, the swiffer, broom, then a microfiber mop, so we went and bought this vacuum at Target, hoping it would work well. I LOVE IT! It actually has strong suction, and if you want to use the hand vacuum, it comes out separately with just the push of a button. It works so well - very happy we went with this. I just run it over the floors quickly and it's easy as pie to keep the floors dust and dog-hair free :)
Electrolux Ergorapido

forgot to mention the brand: Electrolux Ergorapido

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

We tried brooms, mops, Swiffer vac, then a cordless vac like the one above (only ours is red and Electrolux) which ran out of power too quickly...not go dead, but would lose too much power to do a good job, and now finally are very happy with our Miele stick vacuum. I wish I'd started with it, even though it's pricey, than waste money on the rest.

If your broom scratches the floor, you might have a defective finish!

 o
RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

I use my upright Oreck. It has 2 speeds (one for hard surfaces and one for carpets) so I can just use one thing for my hardwoods and my area rugs.

Every couple of weeks I use my steam mop for a good cleaning, but I use the vacuum almost daily to keep the dirt, dust and debris in check.

The Oreck doesn't have any on-board tool attachments though, so I have to whip out my small canister for vacuuming baseboards and such.

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

So if I can use a stick vacuum on hardwood, is it OK to use a normal upright vacuum on it as long as it has the setting to turn off the spinning roller? Or does the extra weight damage the finish?

The hardwood we are getting is the first I am going to really try and take care of the right way. We have a hardwood entry now, but I vacuum it with and without the roller and wash it with wet washrags which are not proper care.

Vacuums are one thing I do not skimp on and right afer the reno, I will be trading in my old one for the newest version upright Riccar, and am wondering if I need to get the Riccar AND the Miele stick or just the Riccar (and use the solid surface setting)?

I was told by my floor guy to buy a canister vacuum with a brush attachment. I had a cordless stick vacum that I loved but he said that it would scratch my floors. He said it's the plastic wheels that eventually will scratch the floor. He said to make sure it had rubber wheels. Well I bought the canister and it works great but I think it's a MAJOR PAIN to use. I have looked all over for a cordless with rubber wheels but cannot find one..Ugg! I may just buy a Miele stick vac.

Another Swiffer Vac user here.

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

Does the Miele stick vac have rubber wheels?

 o
RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

Yes I believe all Miele vacums have rubber wheels.

I have had the Hoover Flair for quite a few years. I love the front because it pivots. It picks up even the fine dust. It is about $47 on Amazon. It is so easy to use and I never dread having to pull it out. It has one setting for hardwoods and one for carpet.

I always used just a broom in my apartment, it didn't seem to hurt the floors.

I'll need to use a vacuum since we are getting prefinished in the house.. I'll be starting with the Roomba. My apartment was too cluttered for it and it always got stuck.

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

I use my Miele vacuum but when it's time to wash the hardwood I use
a Bona Kemi mop with cleaner like Sue does. WOW! What a great product and I love the mop system. You plop the Bona cleaner canister into the mop and it sprays the stuff with a press of the trigger. Before I got the "mop" I sprayed the Bona onto the floor from the pump bottle and then wiped the floor on my hands and knees. This mop system rocks!!

Don't ever use Murphy's Oil soap on your hardwood. It took my finish right off!!

All wheels should be watched on hardwood. The Miele stick has one wheel. I used our Dyson before that, but making sure all 4 wheels were clean at all times were too much, and seemingly impossible. Now that you mention it, Needsometips, the weight probably had something to do with it, too.

We also use our Shark steamer after vacuuming to get up things like muddy dog footprints or sticky spills.

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

Well I will have to try a few of these options.

After fori's post, I had DH call our floor guy and he came to look at the floors. He is going to put another coat of poly on after we are all said and done! Whew!

I have the electrolux ergorapido but I want to make sure and get the Bona Kemi.

Like many of the previous posters, we have a Miele canister (which cost an ungodly amount---part of a deal with DH when we got our dog to get a better vacuum with a HEPA filter, but I have to say that it blows our old Kenmore canister out of the water!), vinegar and water (50-50 mix) for light cleaning, and the Bona spray hardwood cleaner with microfiber cloth once a month or so. The Miele has a long retractable cord with rubber wheels, so it pulls around quite easily, and the attachment is specifically for hardwood floors, though they make a million variations for different surfaces. The Murphy's is fine for oil-based finishes but not for water-based finishes (which is what we have), according to our local hardware store.

tracie.erin - how is the roomba?? It is at the top of my mother's day wish list.

For me, there is nothing as good as a good old fashion broom sweep. but the thought of a robot going out and vacuuming up the floor everyday is just too tempting.

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

Thanks for pointing out the difference Artemis. I have 3 coats of oil based finish and have used tons of Murphy oil soap for 6 years. No problem at all. It does a great job and for some reason, is less alergy provoking for me than the Bona.

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

@momof3kids, we have a Roomba too....we use it exclusively in the bedroom (also hardwood) because the dog isn't allowed in there---it doesn't handle dog hair super well as it gets a bit caught up in the brush, though our model is three years old so they probably make better versions now! It has a little docking station under the dresser---we specifically chose furniture in that room that would have enough clearance, since the vacuum predates the house!---and sits there charging, and then once a week it makes the rounds. Gets most of the dust bunnies and dirt, and it's super handy just to be able to take that one room off the cleaning radar.

I really want to get a Scooba for the kitchen, since I hate mopping a lot more than I hate vacuuming....but I hear they're nowhere near as good at mopping as the Roomba is at vacuuming. *sigh*

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

thanks artemis. we don't have pets, just 3 messy young kids. we cannot make it through one meal without crumbs etc on the floor. so it's just constant that I have to sweep. I'm gonna get it... I can't help it, I really want it! and yes, the new roombas are supposed to be really good - I hope!

As far as mopping goes, I ordered the monster steam cleaner from QVC - a super impulse buy one day... I hate cleaning and am trying to make it super easy. granted I've only had it about a month, but i really like it so far. but then I think I'm enjoying it so much because I feel like I'm on the commercial as I mop - i know, i'm nuts!

I keep getting free Swiffers. I don't understand the attraction. I keep giving them away.

This wool mop from Vermont Country Store is the BEST.

Eco friendly, soft, cheap, extremely lightweight, lasts forever (I mean like 10-20 years!) machine washable (but not too often -- the natural lanolin helps trap dust).

Just run it over the floors and shake it clean outside.

If you want to spray it with something like Endust you can too.

Only problem -- the dog and cat might love/hate it too!

Another vote for the Miele stick vac. LOVE it. We have a rustic oak floor with open knots. The Miele sucks all the gunk out of every nook and cranny. I was so concerned about keeping this floor clean, but the stick vac has been great. It has a nice long cord, and a pivoting head to get under the toekicks easily.

RE: Best sweeper for hardwood floors?

@momof3kids, cool---have fun! :) If you can, get a programmable one (they might all come with that now) as that's the one feature I wish ours had---then we could just set it for at time when we aren't home. (As it is, we have to push a button to start it....SOOOO much work! ;)
