Just use a green scrubbie and sand it out. The stone is not stained. There is stuff stuck to the stone.

You can also try acetone or alcohol. It removes any residue left on the stone. It's what removes the oil and wax coating that some people put on to darken the stone as well.

Welcome to the soapstone world. It's soft and porous and that's the way mother nature intended. If you don't want that property and all it's failings, you don't want soapstone.

To my knowledge soapstone is not porous.

@live_wire_oak: a warning...do NOT use a scrubby on soapstone. A cleaner tried that right after I moved in and it leaves rough spots that now need to be sanded out.

gharborwa, if the scrubby left you a rough patch it shouldn't be too much trouble for you to sand it smooth. If you don't already know, find out from your fabricator to what grit the stone was finished, then find some sandpaper of the same grit and use it to refinish the spot.

The same sandpaper should also easily remove whatever is stuck to your stone from that pink foil if you don't find it comes up with the acetone. (I imagine it will, but just in case) Keep in mind you might find it faster to use a lower grit sandpaper first, then work up to the higher grit to finish the patch to match the rest of the stone depending on how high a grit your stone was finished to initially.

And if you've oiled/waxed your stone before all of this you'll have a lighter spot from the acetone or from the scrubby or sandpaper. A new coat of oil/wax and voila! You're back in business!

Thanks for all the help...I've talked to my fabricator, and he told me to start with a 300 grit and then go to 400. I will work up the courage to try this...

Try a Mr Clean Magic Eraser first. It's a VERY fine abrasive and has easily cleaned some things for me that nothing else had touched.
