kitchen cart - actually CUT on top of it?

I am NOT a cook so need some advice here. I am looking at this cart for some much-needed space in my tiny kitchen. It appears to have a clear finish on the top. Does anyone know if there is any reason why we couldn't sand off the finish and use the top as a cutting board? I do not know what kind of wood the top is made of. I don't care if it gets knife marks. Can't afford the high-end carts...

Here is a link that might be useful: cart
