Need countertop help

I could use some help with what "color" laminate/formica countertop to install on my cabinets.

I just bought a slab of soapstone that is going to go on top of a freestanding island that I currently own. It's unfinished maple, but my 3 kids have taken Sharpies to it, so it will need to be painted, not sure what color yet, but not white. I have the typical 90s oak cabinets that I will be painting white.

Would the soapstone-look Formica look odd with the real soapstone? I don't want granite or anything hard since we tend to drop things a lot. We're also not sure how long we'll be here (could be 2 years, could be 20) so don't want to spend a ton of money. I'll be painting the walls a beige/tan, will use red as my accent/accessory color, and I have a Kohler white cast iron drop-in sink that I'll be using as well.

So, any thoughts or ideas? I like the formica soapstone look counters, but don't want it to look like I was _trying_ to match it with the real thing, but I don't know what other color formica would look good. Thanks so much for any help you're willing to provide!

I would suggest that if you are using stone on the island, then you should continue with stone onteh perinmeter. You might want to look at quartz or ceaserstone. I'm not sure that mixing soapstone with formica will give you a cohesive look.

My husband built a house years ago, before I was in the picture. He tried to match laminate with a granite-topped island and it looked really lame. Go for a contrasting look. There are some great laminate designs nowadays.

I think you could do formica with soapstone, but I don't think doing a formica looking soapstone would look right. Like what dianne said.

what is/color your floor? If you're not painting the island the same color as the perimeter I would hesitate to use a soapstone looking laminate on it. What about a laminate that has more blueish/green colors in it like costa esmerelda? What color do you want to paint the island that he soapstone is going on?

formica has 9 'pages' of pattern options. at least 3 have a trace of red in them. i haven't looked at Wilson art tho.

what other color would you have in your kitchen? what color are you painting the island?

I wouldn't do laminate look a like tho.

I'd paint the island red with the soapstone top. The maple wood isn't going to match the oak perimeter in texture and it'll look "off" if you paint them both with the same color. Then paint the perimeter cabinets the white that you want, then use Formica's Santa Cecilia in the Etchings finish on them.

Ok, thanks gang! I've been mulling this over for a few days. I think I'm going to wait awhile before installing a perimeter countertop. I'm going to paint the island red, install some cabinet hardware, and paint the walls a beige color (color is currently a minty/sage green - WTH was I thinking?!?). Then I'll tackle painting the cabinets white and decide about the perimeter counter. Maybe I'll go with soapstone there also, but I wonder if it needs to be from the same slab as the island, which isn't going to happen since it's a remnant.

I did look at some laminate yesterday and liked the Jamocha Granite, Butterum Granite, and the Labrador Granite. But since I'm so visually challenged (really, my vision is so bad that I think I'm considered legally blind), I think I just need to do what I can do first so I can visualize it better.

Anyway, thanks again. You all are so helpful! :)

A red island is really going to make a statement. That's going to be the thing people notice first when they walk in. I've seen several and they look great, but I would do the countertops the same on both sets of cabinets. Sort of tying the two together?

I've seen it with soapstone all the way around (can't find that photo), and with brown granite. I did find a photo (below) of one where the red island has a black top and the white cabinets look to have a gray top. I know you already bought the soapstone, but take a look. The brown granite ones follow. Hope this helps.

RE: More Red Islands

Found a few more. Some have all light countertops. I like the one with stained wood cabinets on the perimeter personally.

Lots of countertop choices!
