BEFORE: This project included pushing out the entire back of our 1950 Cape 7 feet. Also, removing about 5' of our living room wall which involved moving the basement steps over. Removing a wall between the dining room and kitchen, adding a covered porch. We also did all new siding and other exterior things but I'll stick to inside.

Kitchen was originally a galley measuring about 19' x 9 1/2'. Dining Room was about 8 1/2' wide. Now it's really one large room 28' x 16 1/2'. Kitchen side alone is 16' x 16 1/2'

CUSTOM SLIDING DOORS-- These were at one point supposed to be pocket doors but I didn't want to close off views by having 3' of wall pocket on either side so came up with this which is working well at blocking sound but still gives an open feeling to the space.
I also love the 3 lights on the top so it's less busy and easier to clean!

The tile you chose is just fantastic...great texture and creaminess to complement the yellows and whites. The island top is just gorgeous! And the marble is perfect...my husband still wants to put in marble in the future...it's hard to say no when seeing it against your yellow here!

The yellow you chose is just perfect and the placement of it really shows off all of the pieces. Enjoy it in good health and for many years to come!

Fishies, you've done a better job from start to finish than almost anybody else I've seen on GW. You began with a very cohesive vision, you put together fabrics and lighting at the same time you were thinking about paint and tile, you use advice and suggestions better than anybody--and the result all paid off. Congratulations. It's all you!

Love the stools, btw and may I say one of my favorite decorative items in there is that little yellow pitcher with the blue birdie on the handle.. I said "awww.." and smiled when I saw that. I credit you for being a good listener and keeping your eye on the true north. The kitchen is testament to your vision and persistance. So many many people were involved and interested in your process and it is nice to see it all come together. For fun I googled and found your first posts where you were considering a very baroque kitchen. I remember thinking "oh, no!". I am no expert on kitchen design so I didn't contribute, but it was wonderful to watch your progress and evolution of your vision into this...perfection! Enjoy!

Love the buttery, butterscotchy, not-baby-shower-pastel yellow. Yummy, warm, and comfortable.

Love the light fixtures that I would never thought to choose, but are so great here! Unique while still suiting the room.

Love the doors that separate the rooms. Do you ever close them? We have pocket French doors between our kitchen and dining room. We sometimes close them when it gets noisy in the kitchen, which is nice. But rarely close them when we eat in the dining room, which is actually why I wanted them. ;-)

Love the pattern in the backsplash tile. What color are those tiles? In some pics, they look yellow, and in some they look white. Were you considering a more patterned and more yellow backsplash at one point? I was expecting something less quiet.

Those doors separating the LR from the DR are brilliant.

(DH and I had a white Cape with green shutters and a white picket fence as our first home when we married. It was built by a builder for his family--solid, heavy wood doors and trim, lath and plaster, a jewel box really. Was sad when we had to find larger quarters. Love your place.)

First of all, as I read through all the comments I saw so many names and remembered how some of you may have contributed to my kitchen in some way. That is why I didn't want to list people b/c I don't want to leave anyone out! I hope it suffices to say Thanks and you know who you are if you had a part : )

Without sounding crazy, I really am in heaven each time I walk into the kitchen, get to have a cup of tea, talk on the phone, bake muffins.... I find myself just staring at everything and running my hands along the marble... LOL

Our GC really loved it and wants to have professional pics done in the spring. He does homes in our area that are millions of dollars and on all the house/kitchen tours. Ours is just a small, cute home-- but we love it. His comment that our kitchen could stand up to any of the "tour kitchens" really made me feel proud!

deedles- the trash/towel cabinet is 14 3/4". I recommend reading my paper towel thread b/c we had a dowel that I didn't love and replaced it with a better mechanism.

CEFreeman- LOVE your posts! They do always make me smile! We love the house. We did a BIG downsize from a nearly 4000 sq ft house to a now 1700 sq ft HOME. We have two children. We love this house and are hoping it will suit our needs. (I'll never want to leave this kitchen now! And that's where everyone hangs out anyway right?) The living room is our family room which is why we added the doors. The 2 kids rooms are upstairs with a small loft which is their playroom and there's a full bath for them.. SO, they have a little suite of their own and our Bedroom and the main bath is off a small hallway off the living room. We want to finish the basement so they have some more space as they get older.
We love the area we live in and also love having a pool, the school and park across the street and we're walking distance to our downtown where there are a handful of restaurants, ice cream, A&P, pharmacies.... also we are a few miles from the beach! SO, what more could we want? Well, Maybe the butler and pool boy but then we'd have to get a bigger house... right?... hmmm. LOL

quiltgirl- My open shelves are 12" deep. I also had the cabinet maker put a plate groove in all the open shelving and glass cabinets. Presently, I'm only using it to stand up plates in the 2 upper cabs surrounding the hood but I thought it's good to have if I ever want to display plates, etc.
The cabs were all done by a custom PA cabinet maker. I THINK the panels are MDF b/c I believe they said they are better for some reason. Maybe having to do with wood moving? Now, I have to ask about that again. Yes, the cabs were pricey but reasonable at the same time for what we got. I did a lot of price comparing.

rhome- Thank you! Like I was saying to Christine, the doors were mostly b/c the LR is our family room space so we wanted to be able to close things off when the kids are doing hw in the kitchen and DH is watching TV. Or at night if someone (DH) is watching TV and I want to chat in the kitchen on the phone or have a glass of wine with a friend... Last week, I was baking and listening to music through the ceiling speakers and DH watched a movie. It's not sound proof of course but the sounds didn't compete at all! Once that space was nice and open between the 2 rooms, several people said, "Why are you putting doors? Why close it off?" but we knew it was right for us functionally and being I changed the design to glass sliders we got the best of both worlds.
The old swing french door we used to have between our Kitchen and DR was saved and we put it between the LR and hall where Master BR and main bath is. We love it so when someone goes to bed the TV noise gets cut down.

The backsplash tiles are a creamy white and hard to photo. Actually with the whole kitchen it's hard to take photos and get the color right (especially with my mediocre camera). You can see the white looks yellowy in some pics are bluish in others with flash. Anyway, I didn't like any of the whites they offered. Way too cool or sometimes pink.. so they did a custom color match to the BM Mascarpone but actually they are not a perfect match. I think I would ave liked them slightly whiter but they do read white most of the time and definitely aren't yellow. These were the only tiles I ever seriously considered. Before that I was thinking of a ceramic bead board but then found these and lavender_lass and I loved them : ) The pattern is more subtle than when the samples were lying on the table, etc. but I think it's just enough.

I love the Pottery Barn Emma dishes. I have them in yellow and white. They are a bit heavier than I wanted but were the perfect yellow (almost a perfect match to the cabs!) and I couldn't pass them up!

stacylh- Loving the Elux Icon ovens! No issues whatsoever so far : )

lzhwong- The command central is 4' 2" wide. The top is regular shelving and mostly empty at this point : )

homebuyer- The island is 9 feet by 51". The aisle on the eating side is 53" from countertop to countertop and on the working side of island it is 43" and 39" where the fridge is. I actually didn't think of the fact that the fridge would stick out from the cabinetry however it's only at the end of island and hasn't been an issue.

I especially love the lovely yellow on your base cabinets,
your baking area, your backsplash tiles, your marble, broom closet, and bump out window.

Yellow is such a tricky color to work with, but you picked a great hue! So rich without being too bright or pale--perfect! And your walnut island top is the perfect contrast against the cabinetry and beautiful marble. The devil is always in the details and you certainly conquered that devil. I looked quickly through your pictures, but I'm definitely going to have to go back and study things carefully because this is obviously very intelligently designed, not just a pretty face. I expect to learn a lot here.

I do have one question right now, if you don't mind. What made you do your pull out pantries in the style you did with the door that pulls out (I don't know quite what to call it.) rather than a door that swung out on hinges, which would allow you to stand in front of each pull out? Thanks!

I am SO happy because the kitchen turned out exactly as it was in my head for the past year! Sometimes that doesn't happen. I always thought, "It's not even possible I could ever be so lucky that it will look the way I am seeing it in my head." And it does!

berardmr- It all started with sitting down with my GC and his architect and coming up with the plan as far the bumpout, walls being removed, stairs moved, etc.. It changed in various ways several times before finalizing. DH and I had lots of input and communicated what we wanted. A custom cab maker did a kitchen plan although he backed out our job due to scheduling. That plan went to the cab maker we ended up using and he made some changes after our first meeting. From there I pretty much changed things regularly as I sat for hours - almost every night- analyzing EVERYTHING! (DH couldn't imagine what I could possibly be doing!)
The finishes, various pullouts, broom closet, keys, organizational were all things I requested. Same with the bumpout window and the sliding glass doors.

quiltgirl- When you say drawer depth, I think you mean their height as they are all standard 24" depth.
The top drawers are all 4 3/4" high (but the interior is 4 1/8"). I love the 2nd and 3rd drawers in the stacks are 9 1/2" high (8 1/2" in some places) and the pot drawers are 13". The drawer under the double ovens is 9 1/2" high which for the baking dishes would have been too short. However with the adjustable dividers I was able to make it work. The two drawers to the left of the fridge are 13". I wanted those for snacks and bread so went from three drawers to two. Love these! Everything is working out great.

amandasplit-Presently, I am a mom. I taught Music and Spanish before having my children. (I studied Voice and Opera in college). I'm not a kitchen designer and never even looked at a kitchen magazine much until this process started a year and a half ago. I think that's why it took me a couple of months to really figure out my direction. I was new to the whole thing. THEN, I went head first and studied every magazine, website, and GW picture I could find. That's just me. I commit myself like crazy to what I am doing and then hope it all works out! : ) I do love to decorate but how often does one get to do that? GW was so helpful because reading other's posts would remind me of things I would need to think about! I think I asked about a new topic every couple of days. lol

ellabee- Thanks so much! I am so pleased with the doors and am glad I ignored those who said not to put any. I also am leaning towards not putting a window treatment but I am going to wait until the banquette and the cushions get put on. I do feel like we could use a little fabric to absorb sound and soften things but like I said- I'm not going to rush into anything. The beam between the kitchen and dining area is structural but agree it does add a feeling of demarcation.

marcia59- The Pantries- I started a thread about this topic a while back. It was very informative. I'll put it below. I didn't want to have to open doors to roll out the drawers. Also with rollouts I've experienced where the doors sometimes get banged around if they aren't open wide enough of if you don't push the roll out all the way in the door bangs it when you close the door.
On the other hand with pull out pantries, it is one movement. That being said instead of having all the drawers attached to the main door, I decided to only have the top and bottom drawers attached so you can see inside better and have the option of only pulling out what you want to pull out. Also it becomes less heavy to open. People seems to have strong opinions on what is best. Ultimately I went with what I though we'd be more comfortable with. So far it is working really well : )
