Read the gazillions of threads in the Appliance Forum about them . Expensive, LOUD, energy hogs that will constantly make ice but let it melt to get pumped away about covers it. The couple of people that I know that have them don't even turn them on except for the day before the party. And they can afford to do that because they are in an auxillary space where the open door isn't a problem.

Do you have an ice maker in your freezer? You can add one there for a lot less, or if your issue is having more ice for parties, get a counter top ice maker that you pull out and use when needed.

I thought I wanted a built-in until I started thinking about sacrificing space permanently for occasional use, plumbing (water supply is easy -- it's the drain), ick factor and cleaning, etc. The more I researched, the less I wanted one. We wound up replacing the older fridge in the utility room with one that had a working icemaker and simply ran the water supply line behind the washer and dryer. More ice is a perk, but even better is quieter, better fridge and not worrying that I will walk in one day and find everything spoiled. It cost a lot less than an ice maker and I get a lot more use out of it,.
