What size wood hood over 36 in cooktop? Pics?

bkinsey

We are having a wood hood built for over our 36 in cooktop and I was thinking 42" would be good but DH is pushing for 48", anyone seen this before? I think a 48" hood may look to big for a cooktop that size but maybe if I see a pic I will see that it is ok.

Thanks!

We are also building a hood over our 36" gas cooktop, and i think ours is 48" as well. It will be integrated with our cabinetry so it will blend in nicely I think.
If your hood will be standing on its own without cabinetry on either side, I think it may end up looking a bit too top heavy though.
I wish I had pics to share, but we've just begun our remodel.

Is it a sleek shiny low profile induction looking cooktop or a beefy gas thing with big grates?

It's a gas cooktop with big grates and it will have cabinets on each side, it is also on a pretty long wall so I'm thinking it will probably be ok. I just wanted to see some examples because I am the type of person that can't picture things in my head, drives DH nuts! :)

It depends on the style of the hood-- how massive it is and whether it tapers from bottom to top. We are putting a 40 inch hood over a 30 inch range. (Was built custom). It is a dome shape so tapers from 40 at bottom to about 18 at the top. This will look less massive than say a barrel shape which would be the same width at top and bottom. To help you envision what yours might look like you can do some scale drawings on graph paper.

What style of cooking do you intend to use?

If you produce a lot of smoke & grease (grilling & frying) the wider hood has a better chance of capturing the smoke & grease.

We have a Prestige brand stainless steel hood over our 36 inch cooktop. It's 42 inches, and powerful, and it's plenty big. We were on the phone with the cooktop and hood companies to make sure we were getting the correct size and power.

    Mgkinz,

I am the same way, I have to see it to think about it.
I hope these help you. I do not have the exact dimensions.
I tried to find the big beefy range with large wood hoods.
Hoods that look like they are a bit larger or in the size
you mentioned. I am sure I have more, if there is something
specific (white, cherry, tile, pot filler, curved, wood
molding...) I can try to find it for you. I am off to work
on a huge house project but will check in periodically.
I can never stay away from GW.
    Enjoy the hood Eye candy.

boxer- wow, you are amazing...as always :)
What we are planning on is a white wood hood that is incorporated into the cabinetry, your pics were super helpful but if you have any others that fit that criteria I would love to see them!

jgopp- thanks for the pic, love the tile design behind the range, we are thinking of doing something similar.

Boxerpups--what a gift you are to this forum! These pics are helping me envision the white wood hood I'd like over my new CC rangetop in my new kitchen. Gracias!

I did a 42" mantle hood over a 36" range and I think it looks great. Didn't do a mantle to the counter so that may play into your decision. Good luck!

mg- you should for sure go with herringbone! I love the way it turned out, that is carrera marble subway in the pattern. Good luck with your decision :)

Good ole' Boxerpups....you rock. You never cease to amaze me!

Here is my 42' hood over a 36" range. I think it would like fine with 3" extra on each side.... It's not wood, but you can see what I mean.

I think a bigger hood can only improve things when cooking because as it has been said before, you are increasing your capture area.

Wow boxerpups you really do rock!!

I think every one of those hoods/ranges are absolutely beautiful, but I have a question. For those with the cabs that come all the way down to the counter on each side of the range - where is the landing space for taking something from the oven? I mean, if all your burners are occupied, you'd have to take it out and shift over AROUND those cabinets, right? it just has always bothered me when I see those. Beautiful, but doesn't seem practical. Am I alone?

No you are definitely not alone in that thought, I think the same thing. It sure does look pretty but really not practical in real life.
