Shelf above range: what size?

Help! We're putting in a 30" all-gas thermador range (the pro-harmony) in our new kitchen, with a chimney hood. There are no upper cabinets on either side. We want to put a shelf above the range to hold a few items (maybe some spices, and to hang a few utensils).

We've found a few online (for example the "Cucina Mensola Grande with Potrack" at kitchensource.com, and there is another in the "Jon Boos" brand).

First question. These are at a minimum 10" deep, most are at least 12" deep. Is that too deep? Would it block the action of the hood?

Our other question is how high to install one of these shelves.

We've tried to find out how deep are the ones that come with the integrated tall stainless backsplash on some ranges, e.g. the Vikings, but no luck. Can someone with one of those tell us how big they are and how that works?

Thanks in advance!

Andy
